Things I Wish I Knew When I Started My Business

I hope you’ll come to lunch with me and Lifestyle Entrepreneur, Jane Pollack and here’s why:

Have you tried to memorize anything lately? It’s a skill I seem to have forgotten. I had a very short speech to give recently. I used flash cards, wrote the thing out several times in longhand, practiced in front of the mirror and still couldn’t do it. Ultimately, I used my notes and didn’t embarass myself too badly. But I figured there must be a trick that I had either forgotten or just never learned. Learning a new skill (or in this case, an old one) can be frustrating, but I test myself daily. I would never have gotten the-e-list off the ground if I wasn’t open to learning a whole new language: how to use email templates, manipulate blog formats, social media strategies, website development and search engine optimization. This stuff is all brand new to me. I spent my life in retail! I know from fully-fashioned knits and peau de soie, not WYSWYG and HTML. But it’s exhiliarating, too. I love taking webinars and grilling people in my industry for tips on how to do what I do, better. I’ll never stop learning new things.

That’s the long story of why you should join me for lunch with Jane Pollak. I heard Jane speak at Anne Garland’s Reinvention Convention last year, and I thought, “what can this person tell me about opening or running a business that I don’t already know?”  I’m an entrepreneur; I’ve started and run many succesful companies during my career in retail. But I was pleasantly surprised. I came away from the talk with straightforward advice and actionable tips for making a career out of what you love. And I thought it would be great if more women on the Shoreline could benefit from Jane’s wisdom.

So, please join me for lunch with Jane at Saybrook Point Inn on Monday October 24th, from noon until 2pm. You’ll enjoy a delicious lunch by Fresh Salt, have an opportunity to network with like-minded entrepreneurial women, and I promise you’ll leave inspired and having learned something new!
