In the days before organized sports and after school enrichment programs, savvy moms tried to find ways to keep their kids busy without having to actually supervise or shuttle them about. Lucky for my mother, we lived right around the corner from The Cambridge Skating Club. We traipsed over to the vaguely Norwegian clubhouse every winter day and spent our afternoons and weekends gliding around the one-acre outdoor rink, dodging hockey pucks and Axel jumps (while I imagined my mother curled up with a book and a cigarette). These were the happiest moments of my childhood and I try to relive them every chance I get. That said, nobody is more excited than me about the new outdoor rink at Parade Plaza in New London. Rent skates or bring your own; lessons, skate sharpening and a warming hut on site. Head over for the grand opening on December 3rd and an afternoon of activities including figure skating exhibitions, a visit by Santa and the Sugar Plum Fairy, carol singing, a winter farmer’s market and more.
