The charming old building at 21 Main Street in Essex has housed a succession of my favorite shops: River (sadly closed), Peacock and Beale (renamed Button, and decamped for Chester) and the latest iteration, Matilda Design Co., a resource for home decor, gifts and design. Here you’ll find interior decorator, Dennis Pough, and his great taste. Pick up some pillows, vaguely Moroccan votives or evocative blank books that are sure to inspire the next great novel. Stacks of design books with names like Summer House, Glamorous Rooms and Farmhouse Style feature homes you’ll much prefer to your own. Vases of absurdly lifelike flowers will have you dreaming of Spring and the whole place gives off a whiff of freshness including the perfect gray/green color on the walls. And Dennis, what’s that color again?
