Behind the Scenes

The Lyman Allyn’s new exhibit takes you behind the scenes of six  Broadway blockbusters and presents the evolution of each production. There are a number of good reasons to see this exhibit, not the least of which is quelling the sticker shock that inevitably accompanies the purchase of tickets to a Broadway show.

I was equally fascinated by the costume designs (especially the extravagant watercolor renderings of Young Frankenstein) and the miniature doll-house like maquettes of the elaborate stage sets. The intricate lighting maps were lost on me (so that’s how they do it!), but all ages will enjoy viewing the props, costumes, stage sets and video snippets fromThe Producers, Fela!, Hairspray, Young Frankensteinand Memphis.

Sign your middle-school or high schooler up for So You Want to Be in Pictures, which includes a head shot by renowned photographer Joe Standart, an acting workshop and an introduction to the business side of  theater. Click here to sign up and find out about other programs in conjunction with the exhibit.
