The Chocolate Shell
Petite Fours. I just like saying the name. So charming, bringing to mind elegant tea parties and fancy hats. And a sweet, two-bite alternative to the ubiquitous cupcake. If you haven’t had a good reason to visit the ALL new Chocolate Shell in Old Lyme, this is your week. The gem of a shop is packed to the rafters with Easter goodies (including the aforementioned Petite Fours. There. I said it again).
Among the dark, milk or crispy foiled eggs and myriad Easter bunnies from famed producers like Vosges and Harbor Sweets, you’ll find urns of trompe l’oeil quail and robin’s eggs filled with chewy caramel and old-fashioned German papier mache eggs, just the right size for a bon bon or two. A few Passover treats are available, too: fruit slices, coconut macaroons and tins of Barton’s Almond Kisses, a sweet that brought me right back to my grandmother’s Passover table.
