The burger bar craze zigzagged all over Connecticut before settling on the Shoreline, but I’m happy to report that a good one has opened in Westbrook. Haywire Burger Bar is a family-friendly version with something to suit even the pickiest eaters in your tribe: full-on meat (ground fresh daily and antibiotic and hormone free), sort of meat (chicken, salmon, tilapia or crab) and vegetarian (falafel, portobello).
Toppings range from avocado and pickled jalapeno to free-range eggs and eight kinds of cheese. I have a thing for bite-sized food, so a few sliders and a crisp mini iceberg wedge salad ($4.50!) was perfect. Side orders of zucchini fries and onion strings left no room for dessert, but I’ll be heading back for Campfire S’mores served on a tabletop grill and a spiked chocolate milk shake. “Kiddos” menu features cheeseburgers, grilled cheese or hormone-free chicken tenders at a wallet-friendly $4.50 to $6.50 with fries and a drink.
