Sharpe Hill Vineyard, Pomfret

From your first step on the pastoral landscape of Sharpe Hill Vineyard, you’ll feel transported back in time. Opened in 1997, the 100+ acre property harks back to the 18th century with an expert reproduction of a Colonial house, constructed of reclaimed wood from a Brooklyn farm and decorated in the early American style. Take in the panoramic view of the vines, which roll 700 feet above the surrounding countryside, revealing an unforgettable vista. Revel in an intimate meal at the Fireside Tavern (reservations required and make them early!). From the salty baguettes with rosemary butter to the tables elegantly decked out with tulips and tall tapered candles, it’s the perfect backdrop for a special occasion. Whether you enjoy a window overlooking the vines or a cozy seat by the fireplace, every table is the best available. I savored the spicy Creole shrimp with lemon thyme rice and mango chutney paired with the 2012 Dry Riesling. My husband salivated over the filet mignon with lemon dill sauce, cooked carrots, Brussels sprouts, and roasted potatoes with his 2008 Pinot Noir. We skipped the decadent desserts. Big mistake by the look of our neighboring tables. Did I mention the award-winning wines? Including Connecticut’s most popular wine Ballet of Angels. Gourmet cuisine and world-class wines – there’s a reason this hidden gem is the state’s largest and most award-winning winery! Winery hours are Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays 11am-5pm year-round. The Fireside Tavern is currently open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays at 6:30pm and 7pm and lunch on Sundays at 12pm, 12:30pm, 3pm, and 3:30pm. Extended restaurant hours for summer and fall.
