Moxie in Madison!

Moxie, 52 Wall St., Madison

Bite-size buttermilk biscuits and honey butter? Yes, please. We were off to a very good start at Moxie, despite waiting MONTHS (years?) for this Madison hotspot to open its doors. And now we understand why it took so long. Somebody over there (might that be you, Bill Plunkett?) is a perfectionist. From the black walnut tables, comfy leather banquettes and wide plank floors to the single sunflower in a Moxie vase and the logo doggie bags, consideration has been given to, well, just about everything. Moxie is obviously a labor of love. Okay, so…what about the food? Chef Derek Seigfried (previously of perennial favorite, Zinc, in New Haven) offers up a menu of elevated modern comfort food. I was so content with my appetizer of cheese grits with sauteed mushrooms, cauliflower and a shower of parsnip chips that I could have stopped there. But, no, I pushed on, through a generous plate of seared pork tenderloin atop a bacony potato cake (a latke with bacon…really, what’s better?) and fried brussels sprouts (might add those babies to my 50 Ways to Make a Brussels Sprout). A trendy fried chicken steamed bun may not compete with Momofuku, but otherwise everything we tried was delish. Hubby, of course, was totally happy with the strip steak. Expect a scene at the long cement bar at the front of the house, serving up craft cocktails (surprisingly none of which are mixed with Moxie), a strong selection of hipster cans, local brews, and interesting wines by the glass. The menu includes a bunch of inventive burgers (including a beet and bean version), and plenty of vegetarian-friendly salads and sides. Prices are reasonable: $11 – $13 for burgers and $19 – 25 for mains. Look for the Moxie Mobile, a green International Harvester Scout parked out front. Good for you, Madison, good for you. Find Moxie on facebook.
