Otto To Go, Chester

By the looks of the parking lot at Pasta Vita (it’s alway jam-packed) I’m surprised that more entrepreneurs haven’t jumped on the take-out bandwagon. Clearly there’s a big market for it on the Shoreline. When I heard Otto, River Tavern’s beloved pizza place, was launching takeout, we raced right up to give it a try. They’re stoking the wood-fired pizza oven early to produce a menu of Italian specialties with a uniquely River Tavernish spin. Meats, especially, benefit from a wood-fired roast. A chicken breast with capers, green olives and cherry tomatoes was perfectly cooked and flavorful. The pork tenderloin, on a bed of pears and butternut squash with a touch of honey hit just the right ratio of savory to sweet. Eggplant parmesan was on the spicy side (maybe a bit too much for some tastes) but I liked that it was a healthier version of the dish, in a robust tomato sauce with stretchy scamorza. For me, as pretty as it looked, the four cheese lasagna was less successful, rather heavy on cheese, sauce and sage (but enough to feed a family!). Fans of RT’s famous Caesar Salad with crunchy homemade croutons, will be happy to get one to go. Portions are generous, each dish feeds two to three. Prices for mains range from $11.95 to $17.95.
