In my old retail days, I used to do small business consulting, and I always counseled shopkeepers that one of the most important things was to have a distinct point of view. So that when the customer browses your shop, she knows what she’s getting into it. Being all things to all people is impossible. Which brings me to this lovely new shop-slash-gallery in Mystic. The owner, Pamela Stone, has a keen eye and a singular vision. The merchandise mix is unusual; you won’t find her jewelers or scarf manufacturers down the block because she has sourced her goods from all over the world: find gorgeous French Jacquard scarves to antique Turkish kilims and handblown Moroccan glasses. Several jewelry designers are on display, each unique. A well-priced Spanish artisan mixes silver vermeil with leather, another is a collection of on-trend tiny, delicate gold earrings and chains with semi-precious gems, and the third (my favorite) is Susan Cumming’s chunky sterling hand-wrought chains with various charms (here called “enhancers”). The walls are chock-a-block with works by contemporary artists, and the hand-painted ceramic bowls would make THE perfect wedding gift. Pam collaborates with a leather designer to offer her exclusive and well priced ($149) cross-body bags and the cutest jewelry travel pouches ($40). Adorable, too, are the hand-hewn dog and horse tags (see pix below). The more time I spent in the shop, the more I wanted, a dangerous but happy thing.
Head over any day but Wednesday. Enjoy festive openings on the first Friday of the month. On June 2nd artist, Samuel Austin is flying in to chat with patrons, plus a classical guitarist and bubbly from 5 to 7pm.
