Guilford Coffee House
Don’t let the name fool you. Guilford Coffee House has more under its roof than just cappuccinos and Caffe Americanos. Yes, dash in for that soothing morning green tea or late afternoon caffeine boost of Jamaican Blue Mountain between errands, but owners Denise and Joe Harvey invite you to settle into a leather club chair and savor the inventive menu of hearty comfort fare.
With plenty of rustic charm (think raffia-tied mason jars filled with coffee beans and crystal knobs fixed to shiplap along the walls), relax and read by the window, join a friend at a table for two with plenty of stroller room, or grab a stool at the back bar and get to work with free WiFi.
After checking the chalkboard menu, I settled on the Avocado & Heirloom Tomatoes Panini. The first bite of buttery wheat bread pressed around creamy mozzarella and avocado, bursting with the tangy sweetness of tomatoes, and drizzled with a light balsamic syrup, had me hooked. The super friendly staff checked in to make sure all was tasty. I couldn’t help but ask the couple next to me about the Jammed Short Rib Grilled Cheese they were sharing. They loved the combined flavors of the coffee braised shredded ribs, fig jam, and brie on grilled sourdough. Later in the week, I stopped by for the perfect afternoon pick me up of Warm Bavarian Pretzels with an amber ale beer and cheese dipping sauce.
If you’re on the run, fill up a Guilford Coffee House travel thermos paired with a locally baked Cohen’s Bagel or pastry from Pandora Bakery in New York. A welcome addition to the breakfast/lunch lineup in town.
