For a lot of us, it’s back-to-school this week. My daughter is starting a new one (yikes, high school!) and although I know she’s excited, she’s a bit nervous, too. So I tapped my friend Dr. Abby Lipschutz, a clinical psychologist who specializes in children and adolescents, for some back-to-school survival tips and here’s what she had to say:

Going back to school at any age can result in mixed feelings of excitement and anxiety. Everyone gets the first day jitters. For children or adolescents going to a new school such as middle school or high school, there may be concerns about meeting new friends and fitting in with the crowd.

Be Supportive: Talk about it. Listen and provide reassurance; don’t assume you know how your child feels. Stay calm.

Get organized: Provide a new routine, get a copy of the schedule, a map of the school, and school supplies in advance, color coordinate each subject.  

Connect: Help set up a play date or social gathering with kids from the classroom or new school. 

Enjoy! Recharge yourself while the kids are in school.  Enjoy the alone time. Taking care of you will help you better take care of your child!
