I’m from Cambridge, and Cantabrigians find nothing amiss about eating ice cream all winter long. My mother would round us up on a cold winter’s night for a brisk walk to Harvard Square and a mocha almond cone. To me, this was perfectly normal. Not so much in Connecticut. The ice cream parlors empty out (or horrors, close down) during the winter months. But Sherri Athay, owner of A La Mode ice cream in Centerbrook has come up with a genius and cold weather-friendly idea: Truffle shots! She whips up ganache from the finest ingredients (E. Guittard chocolate) and adds all sorts of yummy flavors: Madagascar vanilla, almonds, burnt caramel, a hint of raspberry, and serves them up in a shot glass with a spoon. Choose from twelve flavors (Flowers of Siciliy is the favorite, a citrus and floral flavored white and semi-sweet chocolate mix) and either buy them individually or spring for a gorgeous gift box. Plenty of thought has gone into the luxe packaging and these make a highly unique and locally produced gift.
