Nothing like the sight of a waterfall of silken chocolate to soothe the tensions of a trip down I95. The Chocolate Lab is a cheerful spot off the lobby, in a grown-up, Willy Wonka sort of way. Skewers of housemade marshmallows, mini ice cream bars or strawberries are for dipping in the waterfall, or go for a fresh scoop of sour cherry or sea salted caramel gelato. The Lab is lovely for breakfast, too, and serves up lattes and cappuccinos at a communal table, along with freshly baked French pastries. Said pastries are hot out of the Bakery Bubble; the glass-enclosed mini-kitchen. Drool long enough, as I did, over the brioche and croissant and the chef will invite you in for a chat! If it’s a warm evening (or even if it isn’t; every public space sports a fireplace) have a cocktail at the glamorous outdoor bar before heading in to the even more glamorous dining room (pictured). Slabs of grilled meat and delicate pizzas share menu space with all manner of salads and lighter fare with a seasonal and local emphasis. The kale salad studded with pomegranate seeds was a delicious and healthy starter; a generous portion of Daube de Boeuf was lacking a carrot or two, but the homemade spaetzle and a hint of orange zest more than made up for it.
