Spin at SHiFT Cycling, Guilford

Kevin Glassbrook, an instructor at SHiFT Cycling in Guilford, gets pretty excited about his job. He’ll tell you he’s excited as he sends you up a massive hill or into a sprint series, and you’ll notice he’s excited as he sings along with thumping dance tunes, weaving the lyrics into his instruction and plowing through the ride.

Kevin took me and about 15 others through a SHiFT U class, the studio’s signature, beginner-friendly ride incorporating high-intensity climbs and flat recovery rides. The end result? Soaked clothes, screaming legs, and a clear head. The bonus? A chilled, lavender-scented towel to wipe off at the end of class.

The neat thing about SHiFT is each of the studio’s 29 premium Schwinn bikes is hooked up to a large TV in the center of the room, allowing you to track your watt output, RPMs, MPH, calories, distance, and overall power. And for those with a competitive streak, you’ll love being ranked among your classmates. You can try to catch the person in front of you, or simply try to beat your own records. It’s easy to track your progress also—you’ll get an email report of your performance every time you “SHiFT.”
