NOLO, Scratch-Made Italian in New Haven

nolo

It could be said that the last thing that New Haven needs is another pizza place, but that’s not all that’s on the menu at this vast new eatery in the old Jet Cleaners building on State Street. They’ve got a few other fun tricks up their sleeve, like an in-house brewery and scratch-made, well, everything! We started with a tasty cheese and charcuterie board and a 6-ounce Watermelon lager. My daughter knows a bit more about beer than I do, but this is an interesting one. Not hoppy, slightly sour, almost like a hard cider, and so refreshing. A salad of winter veggies (Brussels, Romanescu broccoli) sprinkled with pomegranate and doused with grapefruit segments was a fresh and winning combo. Then on to our favorite and simple pasta, housemade bucatini cacio e pepe with crispy, salty bits of pancetta in a light lemony sauce. Perfection. And we didn’t resist the wafer thin-crusted pizzas making their way out of the wood-fired ovens. We chose The Queen,  a classic with a heavily charred crust, dollops of buffalo mozzarella and a slightly salty tomato sauce. We loved our cushy booth and delightful server, Danielle, and will most definitely head back to taste more of the menu and unusual beer offerings.

Oh, and there’s parking!
