The Blake, A Sophisticated Stay in New Haven

the blake

It seems modern boutique hotels these days depend on the likes of West Elm or even Ikea for their style, but not so the Blake. This new stay smack in the middle of New Haven walks a tightrope between spare modern design and luxurious coziness. Here’s it’s all about contrasting textures and interesting details.

In the guest rooms, a rust velvet sofa invites curling up with a good book, while teal linen curtains close over slubby roman shades to keep out the light of day. The warm oak floorboards meet up with black slate and white marble in the oversized bathrooms that feature glossy subway tile and black fixtures with touches of brass. A kitchenette stands at the ready for quick in-room meals (you’ll find a shop filled with fixings in the lobby). Lovely touches are a Nespresso machine, Malin and Goetz products, and a cushy king bed with a crisp white duvet and a leather headboard. If you’ve forgotten your reading material, no worries, you’ll find vintage copies of the Paris Review along with local magazines.

The lobby is a vast gathering space with a two-sided fireplace at its center. Velvet couches and cushy armchairs are at the ready for lounging, and coffee tables are stacked with tomes, making for a leisurely afternoon of browsing. In the morning free coffee is available, along with an espresso cafe and breakfast pastries. If you’re visiting The Blake Hotel over the weekend, make reservations for brunch at Hamilton Park.

We felt far removed from the city, but the Shubert and College Street Music Hall are around the corner, as well as many of New Haven’s most popular restaurants, like Roia, Elm City Social, Union League, and Zinc. We were sorry to have only an overnight to enjoy our surroundings but will be back soon. Another restaurant is slated to open on the roof in June and will surely be the Next Big Thing.
