Considering Sober October? Better Rhodes is the Next Best Thing

better rhodes

Just in time for Sober October (yes, it’s a thing, especially since booze consumption is up 27% since the beginning of the pandemic), I’ve discovered a genius delivery service out of Madison. With the surge in availability of non-alcoholic cocktails, aperitifs, wines, and beers, Better Rhodes curates the best of them and delivers directly to your home.

For those of us who look forward to an evening cocktail but feel a bit pickled after the last six months of lock-down, here’s your answer. We had a chance to try a variety of “drinks” and were astonished that the non-alcoholic versions of familiar spirits could be so tasty (and spot-on).

Here are a few of our favorites:

We loved Lyre’s Italian Orange mixed with some Fever-Tree Tonic, a refreshing, citrusy, slightly bitter stand-in for Lillet on the rocks or the ubiquitous Aperol Spritz. This non-alcoholic blend combines natural essences of ruby grapefruits, blood oranges, and pomegranate. While the 200 calories in an Aperol Spritz add up quickly, this cocktail has a mere 25. Good for your liver AND your waist.

The Cranberry Cosmo by Mingle is a sparkling pale pink elixir crafted from organic sugar, lime, orange, and cranberry juice. It’s not too sweet and would be a lovely luncheon accompaniment or baby shower toast.

Next, we sipped a Cabernet Sauvignon by Vin Zero and were surprised by the dry but fruity and full-bodied glass. An easy sub with a cheese board or steak and only 100 calories in a 5-ounce pour. Even a French friend labeled it surprisingly good!

If you’re on the hunt for something festive, crack open a bottle of Tost, a fizzy white tea, cranberry, and ginger blend that sports a mere 60 calories per 12 ounces. Delish.

We’re no beer experts, but the two we tried, Punk AF and Ceria, tasted like the real thing to us. We threw around adjectives like hoppy, citrusy, and bold, but beer drinkers will have to come to their own conclusions, as we have no idea whatsoever what we’re talking about.

If you’re looking to reduce your consumption, or perhaps shave some calories but still want to look forward to ending the day with a drink in hand, we’d recommend placing an order with Better Rhodes ASAP. Whether your go-to is a G&T or an Old-Fashioned, there’s an option here for you.
