A Spring Dinner at Bar Bouchee, Madison

bar bouchee

We were cleaning up our website recently, and I was stunned that I hadn’t updated Bar Bouchee since 2015. The pic on the post was embarrassing! My photo skills have improved a bit, and I didn’t need much of an excuse to return to one of my absolute favorite restaurants on the Shoreline!

It’s been over a year since I’d set foot inside, and the only thing (thankfully) that’s changed is a tented outdoor seating area and acrylic panels between the high-top tables. Otherwise, this remains one of the best spots for authentic French bistro fare, classic but inspired cocktails, and a thoughtful and reasonably priced wine list.

My friend Ellen and I happily downed a Hemingway Daquiri (lime and Luxardo) before diving into the Spring menu. For me, a hunk of hanger steak with a petite pot of perfect Gratin Dauphinoise (I practically licked the cocotte!), and for Ellen, a rather large portion of plump scallops with a mirepoix of English peas, bacon, and carrots. We couldn’t resist the dessert special of Isle Flottante: airy meringue floating in creme Anglaise, studded with blueberries, raspberries, and almonds.

Every dinner out these days feels like a celebration, and I will never take it for granted again. Nor will I wait so long for an evening at Bar Bouchee. Reservations a must.
