SUMMARY:In Hine Sight – Eyes Wide Open
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Early Dawn Farm by Skip Hine \nAbout Skip Hine’s Garde Exhibition \nOpening Reception: Sunday\, August 16 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm before the Our House Concert \nFour years ago\, I published my book “Memories in Hine Sight – My Life With a Camera” highlighting my life and career as an award winning commercial photographer in my NYC studio or traveling the world shooting for major advertising and corporate clients. \nAs much as I love what I’ve been able to do for 50 years\, Deb and I now live full time in Lyme where I continue shooting for clients but\, most importantly\, emphasizing my own personal work. \nSince the book’s release\, my work has been shown in art galleries\, cover stories with Ink Magazine\, Estuary and Lyme/Old Lyme Neighbors\, schools\, libraries\, international podcasts\, permanent collections\, retail stores\, book signings\, and interviews by Channel 8’s Anne Nyberg\, CT Examiner\, and LymeLine. \nI finally had a chance to tell my story. \nDuring my career of incredible experiences that I never dreamed of\, I was fortunate to work with memorable actors and models\, famous athletes and CEOs\, stylists\, set builders\, and producers. I tried to take advantage of the opportunities which allowed me to shoot portraits for my own portfolio after the project was over; some of these are included in the show. \nGone are the days of needing $10\,000 cameras and a crew on set; I now shoot on a more personal level as a creative artist\, which allows me to be much more flexible by relying on what I learned all these years through photography and design without relying on AI manipulation to memorialize images of textures\, shapes and light in the world around us. \nBecause my parents died so young\, my dad’s photographs of our childhood motivated me to memorialize people and the scenes around me. \nWhether it’s a French château or a portrait of a local artisan\, there is a story behind every photograph. \nThis exhibition will be a part of my next book titled – “In Hine Sight – Eyes Wide Open”

SUMMARY:Tree Swallow Cruises
DESCRIPTION:Witness one of the most spectacular avian events when thousands of Tree Swallows congregate on the lower Connecticut River at sunset to settle in on a giant communal roost during their fall migration. Birds come from miles away\, creating a ballet of synchronized flight before settling down for the night. Renowned ornithologist and artist Roger Tory Peterson wrote that “the tornadoes of Tree Swallows eclipsed any other avian spectacle I have ever seen.” Join Connecticut Audubon naturalists and journey from Essex\, by train and then by boat to see the awe–inspiring display. Enjoy picturesque scenery from the 70–foot Mississippi–style river boat’s three decks. Snacks\, a full bar\, and restrooms are available on board. If you take only one trip this fall\, make sure it’s this one! \nTours depart from the Essex Steam Train & River Boat in Essex. Appropriate for children eight years and over. \nTours are approximately three and a half hours in length and vary in departure time from 3:30 – 5 pm\, depending on the date chosen (the later in the month\, the earlier the departure time).

SUMMARY:"A Piece of My Heart"
DESCRIPTION:Women played a huge and often under-recognized role in the Vietnam War—both militarily and culturally. They worked under combat conditions\, and carried invisible wounds long after the war ended. About 11\,000 U.S. military women served in Vietnam\, with the vast majority being nurses (Army\, Navy\, and Air Force). “A Piece of My Heart” is a vivid\, personalized portrayal\, giving names and faces to the thousands of women who served during the war\, and acknowledging their roles as essential\, even when they weren’t always appreciated at the time. The play has heart\, humor\, sadness and grief with a beautiful soundtrack of music from the sixties and seventies. \nTickets are $60 for adults; $55 for seniors; $25 for students of all ages (plus fee) and are available by calling the Playhouse box office at 860.767.7318 or purchase online.

SUMMARY:Musical Masterworks Opens Season 36 with an Exploration of America’s Musical Voice
DESCRIPTION:As America commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, Musical Masterworks opens its 36th season with a program that asks a compelling question: What makes music sound American?\nArtistic Director Tessa Lark opens the 2026–2027 season around that idea\, inviting audiences to explore the extraordinary diversity of American music while celebrating the traditions and cultural influences that continue to shape our nation’s artistic identity. \nThe 36th season begins on October 10 and 11 and features an acclaimed quartet of returning Musical Masterworks favorites: pianist Jeewon Park\, violist Melissa Reardon\, cellist Edward Arron\, and violinist and Artistic Director Tessa Lark. \nThe thoughtfully curated program reflects both America’s rich musical heritage and the international influences that helped define it. Audiences will hear Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s Louisiana Blues Strut\, Jessie Montgomery’s Duo for Violin and Cello\, Aaron Copland’s Waltz and Celebration from “Billy the Kid\,” Rebecca Clarke’s Viola Sonata\, and Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat Major\, Op. 87. \n“Season 36 begins during America’s 250th anniversary\, so we’re celebrating and exploring the diverse sounds of American music\,” said Lark. “My hope is to highlight how America’s uniquely rich cultural history is embodied in its wonderfully varied musical output. Across these programs\, traditions blend to create new sound worlds\, and the juxtaposition of contemporary works with enduring classics changes the way we hear the music.” \nThe concert also marks the return of longtime Musical Masterworks artists Edward Arron and Jeewon Park\, whose artistic leadership helped shape the series for many years. Their return alongside Lark reflects the sense of continuity and artistic family that has become a hallmark of Musical Masterworks. \nFrom the blues-inspired rhythms of Perkinson to the expansive American landscapes of Copland\, the contemporary voice of Jessie Montgomery\, the expressive brilliance of Rebecca Clarke\, and Dvořák’s beloved chamber masterpiece (written after his influential years in America) the opening program offers audiences a musical journey that is both deeply rooted in tradition and unmistakably relevant today. \nConcerts will be presented at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme\, whose intimate setting has become one of New England’s most treasured chamber music venues. The remarkable acoustics and close connection between performers and audience create an experience rarely found in larger concert halls. \nMusical Masterworks’ 36th season continues through April 2027 with programs celebrating America’s rich musical landscape\, including the series’ first performance featuring the church’s historic organ\, the return of internationally acclaimed artists\, and the annual appearance of the Irving M. Klein International Strings Competition First Prize Winner. \nConcerts take place Saturday\, October 10\, at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday\, October 11\, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme\, 4 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, Connecticut. \nPurchase tickets
