SUMMARY:Alabama Story at Ivoryton Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:As the Civil Rights movement is brewing\, a controversial children’s book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit stirs the passions of a segregationist State Senator and a no-nonsense State Librarian in 1959 Montgomery\, Alabama. Political foes\, star-crossed lovers\, and one feisty children’s author\, Garth Williams\, famous for his illustrations of E.B. White’s Stuart Little\, Charlotte’s Web\, and Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie\, inhabit the same page in a Deep South of the imagination that brims with humor\, heartbreak\, and hope. The play is inspired by true events. \nThis year marks the 66th anniversary of the publication of Garth Williams’ The Rabbit’s Wedding. Ivoryton Playhouse is proud to present this smart and funny\, dark and hopeful\, and sadly still relevant play. It’s a love letter to reading – and librarians! \nIvoryton Playhouse is a renowned small professional theater located in the town of Essex. It is known for its exceptional productions and commitment to creating unforgettable experiences for audiences of all ages. \nClick to buy tickets:  $60 for adults\, $55 for seniors\, and $25 for students

SUMMARY:Mystical Murmurs: An Enchanted Environment by Adrien Broom
DESCRIPTION:In this immersive exhibition\, contemporary artist Adrien Broom (born 1980) invites audiences to experience the mysterious world of the forest and imagine themselves at faerie-scale. A photographer\, set designer\, and filmmaker\, Broom welcomes visitors to enter a darkened gallery to encounter a magical installation inspired by the natural environment\, faerie folklore\, and legends. The artist activates the space with an oversized faerie ring—a circle of mushrooms that grows in the wild—that beckons visitors to enter. Drawing on medieval European folk beliefs and superstitions\, faerie-friends are enticed to step inside the colossal mushroom ring\, which triggers entrancing songs that infiltrate the circle and seduce guests to dance beyond time. \nNewly commissioned examples of Broom’s mythical photography\, shot in a forest in nearby Guilford\, Connecticut\, encircle the installation. The artist incorporates circles throughout the installation\, exploring them thematically and physically as portals\, rings\, tunnels\, and cycles of life. As she explains\, “I aim to explore these enigmatic elements and their interconnectedness\, inviting viewers’ imaginations to run wild and ponder the secrets hidden within the forest.” Born and raised in Old Lyme\, Broom’s work frequently draws inspiration from childhood\, fantasy\, surrealism\, and themes evoking wonder. \nImage: Adrien Broom\, “The Adventures of Beastie\,” 2021. SUMMARY:Birds in Winter at Saint Ann's Episcopal Church
DESCRIPTION:Ornithologist Roger Pasquier will present a talk on his book Birds in Winter\, Surviving the Most Challenging Season on Sunday September 22 at 9:30am at Saint Ann’s Episcopal Church in the Griswold Room. The talk\, part of Saint Ann’s Griswold Forum series of lectures\, will be illustrated with a power point presentation. \nAs Pasquier reflects\, “September may still feel like summer\, but in Old Lyme many birds are already preparing for winter. Blue Jays and chickadees are caching nuts and seeds they will retrieve months from now. Woodpeckers are drilling new roost holes for themselves. Male Mallards are molting into the plumage they will use to court females in December. At Goose Island\, Tree Swallows are massing before they head south to avoid the cold. Look around\, and you can see birds anticipating the future season. \nPasquier will describe the winter season’s distinct challenges for birds that winter where they have bred and for migrants to distant regions. And as global warming is altering the nature of winter itself\, Pasquier will discuss how birds are adjusting to a rapidly changing climate.\nAll are welcome to attend this talk. Books will be available for sale and can be signed by the author.\n—– \nRoger Pasquier is an ornithologist with the American Museum of Natural History in New York. A life-long birder\, Roger’s career has been in conservation\, with the World Wildlife Fund\, Environmental Defense Fund\, and National Audubon Society. He is the author of several books on birds and art history\, including Masterpieces of Bird Art\, Birds at Rest and Painting Central Park.
