SUMMARY:Traditional Art in a Modern World: A Conversation with Porfirio Gutiérrez
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon panel conversation with Porfirio Gutierrez\, a contemporary indigenous Oaxacan artist using traditional textile methods\, who is featured in the exhibition Chromatopia: Stories of Color in Art. Hear from Gutierrez and cultural leaders Dr. Julia Kushigian\, Professor of Hispanic Studies at Connecticut College\, Manuel Lizarralde\, Professor of Botany at Connecticut College\, and Lina Agudelo\, Director of the Hispanic Alliance of Southeastern Connecticut. \nThe use of natural materials for pigments\, like the cochineal insect\, in Oaxaca has cross cultural and interdisciplinary significance as it reflects native artmaking traditions\, the complex history of colonialism in North America\, 17th-21st century global trade\, and a contemporary return to natural materials and traditional creative methods. The discussion will focus on aspects of Gutierrez’s process and knowledge that illustrate wider points about the intersection of indigenous peoples and colonial powers\, balanced use of natural resources\, and the continued threat to traditional lifeways and knowledge by market forces. \nPlease note: The artist will have works available for purchase. \nFor more information and to reserve a spot Click Here.

SUMMARY:First Impressions & Congratulations
DESCRIPTION:Visitors to the Lyme Art Association will experience the best in contemporary representational art in two shows on view this winter highlighting their member artists’ accomplishments. For more than 100 years\, artists flocked to Old Lyme to create and exhibit fine art\, and today’s members of the Lyme Art Association carry on that tradition. \n“First Impressions”\, the 31st Annual Associate Artist show\, is on view through March 2\, 2023. This juried exhibition features the Lyme Art Association’s Associate Artist members\, accomplished artists who have successfully exhibited in selective shows. Artists in the show vie for the coveted first place award\, which comes with an opportunity for a solo show later in the year. First Impressions includes a full range of media and themes: landscape\, portrait\, still life paintings and sculpture. The exhibition is juried by landscape painter and illustrator John MacDonald. \nAt the same time\, the Lyme Art Association is proud to feature its newest Elected Artists in the show Congratulations. These artists were elected by their peers after a rigorous selection and evaluation process. These seven newly elected artists will display a selection of their work in this group exhibition. Join us in welcoming new Elected Artists Linda Boisvert-DeStefanis\, Jessica Teti Turgoose\, Earl Grenville Killeen\, Brian McClear\, Nick Salerno\, Bill Sonstrom and Garnet Wrigley\, and see highlights from their impressive portfolios. Both exhibits are on view now and run through March 2\, 2023. \nFirst Impressions and Congratulations are proudly supported by Liberty Bank\, our Presenting Sponsor. \nImage: Catherine Puccio\, “Sadie”\, oil \nFor more information visit: lymeartassociation.org
