SUMMARY:Traditional Art in a Modern World: A Conversation with Porfirio Gutiérrez
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon panel conversation with Porfirio Gutierrez\, a contemporary indigenous Oaxacan artist using traditional textile methods\, who is featured in the exhibition Chromatopia: Stories of Color in Art. Hear from Gutierrez and cultural leaders Dr. Julia Kushigian\, Professor of Hispanic Studies at Connecticut College\, Manuel Lizarralde\, Professor of Botany at Connecticut College\, and Lina Agudelo\, Director of the Hispanic Alliance of Southeastern Connecticut. \nThe use of natural materials for pigments\, like the cochineal insect\, in Oaxaca has cross cultural and interdisciplinary significance as it reflects native artmaking traditions\, the complex history of colonialism in North America\, 17th-21st century global trade\, and a contemporary return to natural materials and traditional creative methods. The discussion will focus on aspects of Gutierrez’s process and knowledge that illustrate wider points about the intersection of indigenous peoples and colonial powers\, balanced use of natural resources\, and the continued threat to traditional lifeways and knowledge by market forces. \nPlease note: The artist will have works available for purchase. \nFor more information and to reserve a spot Click Here.

SUMMARY:"A Walk in the Woods" at Drama Works
DESCRIPTION:Drama Works Theatre Company presents “A Walk in the Woods” by Lee Blessing. The setting is a pleasant woods on the outskirts of Geneva where two superpower arms negotiators\, one Russian and one American\, have come to get away from the negotiating table for a little break. The American\, John Honeyman\, new to arms negotiating\, is fervently idealistic about what can and must be done. Through their absorbing and revealing conversations\, we become aware of the deepening understanding between these two wise and decent men and also their deep frustration. \n“Not only one of the best dramas of the few dramas to hit Broadway . . . it also is the best comedy.” TIME MAGAZINE \n“A Walk In The Woods” runs February 24th\, 25th\, and March 3rd\, 4th and 5th. \nClick Here for more information and to purchase tickets.
