SUMMARY:SECWAC Presents “The Third Gulf War”
DESCRIPTION:Eric Fleury\, Ph.D.\, on “The Third Gulf War” \nWednesday 3/25/2026 \nReception: 5:30pm | Presentation 6:00pm \n“The Third Gulf War” \nThe United States is once again at war in the Middle East. At this moment\, it is uncertain if it will be a relatively short and decisive conflict like the First Gulf War\, or a painful and drawn-out quagmire like the Second. Professor Eric Fleury of Connecticut College will discuss the origins of the conflict\, evaluate the strategies of the various players\, and address its likely consequences for both the short and the long term. \nWho: Eric Fleury\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor of Government and International Relations\, Connecticut College \nWhen: Wednesday March 25\, 2026 | Reception: 5:30pm | Presentation: 6:00pm \nWhere: First Congregational Church of Old Lyme \nNon-Members $20 | Register Here \nAbout the Presenter: \nEric Fleury’s work lies at the intersection of international relations and political theory. He examines how contemporary topics build upon foundational concepts of diplomacy and warfare\, with a particular interest in how leaders both shape and are shaped by public opinion in times of crisis. His first book\, On Absolute War: Terrorism and the Logic of Armed Conflict\, examines how terrorism both affirms and modifies the classic maxim of Carl von Clausewitz\, “war is merely the continuation of policy by other means.” Prof. Fleury’s current book project focuses on the breakdown of the so-called ‘liberal international order’ as the guiding concept of U.S. foreign policy. Drawing on Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America\, he shows how the very effort to understand foreign policy as the expression of a singular ideology is in fact the byproduct of a tug-of-war between public opinion and the bureaucracy\, and that the current crisis is best understood as the failure to achieve a consensus within either body.

SUMMARY:Portrait\, Likeness\, Type: Jean-Léon Gérôme’s Bashi-Bazouk at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts
DESCRIPTION:Join Lyme Academy of Fine Arts on Saturday\, March 7\, for a special guest lecture\, Portrait\, Likeness\, Type: Jean-Léon Gérôme’s Bashi-Bazouk\, presented by Asher Miller\, Curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The lecture will be followed by a brief conversation with Emily M. Weeks\, Ph.D.\, Lyme Academy’s Principal Art Historian\, and a preview of Lyme Academy’s newest exhibition\, The New Bronze Age: Masterpieces of 19th- and Early 20th-Century Sculpture from the Karlheinz Kronberger Collection. A reception with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will conclude the evening. \nThis talk reveals hidden layers of a painting that presents as a convincing depiction of a Black Ottoman mercenary. Its painter\, the consummate nineteenth-century French academic artist Jean-Léon Gérôme\, employed a model and accessories to stage the composition in his Paris studio. Gérôme had traveled to the Middle East\, but what other factors contributed to his process of pictorial invention? And while Bashi-Bazouk is undoubtedly the product of traditional practice\, might it have more in common with vanguard painting of its time than meets the eye? \nPreview Event\n5 pm – Guest lecture\, Portrait\, Likeness\, Type: Jean-Léon Gérôme’s Bashi-Bazouk\, with Asher Miller\, the Eugene V. Thaw Curator of European Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, in the Academy’s Cole Studio\n6:15 pm – Exhibition Preview & Reception in the Academy’s Chauncey-Stillman Gallery \nEvent tickets are available online for $100 per guest.\nProceeds from this event support Lyme Academy’s Chauncey-Stillman Exhibition Program and all future Academy exhibitions.

Many of the area’s finest restaurants\, caterers\, and eateries will serve up their signature chowder from the warmth of the shops in Olde Mistick Village. A team of local judges will choose the winners in four categories: 1) Best Traditional Chowder 2) Heartiest Chowder 3) Most Creative Chowder 4) Judges’ Choice\, and 5) Via individual ballot\, the public will vote for the winner of the coveted “People’s Choice Award” for Best Overall Chowder! SUMMARY:An Introduction to Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck with MET Curator Dita Amory at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts
DESCRIPTION:Join Lyme Academy of Fine Arts on Friday\, February 27\, 2026\, at 5:00 pm for “An Introduction to Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck”\, a guest lecture and book signing with Dita Amory\, Robert Lehman Curator in Charge at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nThis lecture\, presented by Metropolitan Museum of Art Curator Dita Amory\, will introduce the Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946). Renowned throughout Finland\, she is little known in the US. The Metropolitan Museum is the first major US museum to present her work. The exhibition of paintings was designed to present passages in the life of the artist\, tracing a remarkable career from her Paris training in naturalism to her growing abstraction in later years. In addition to developing her own brand of modernism\, Schjerfbeck grew increasingly preoccupied with her materials and their application on canvas. She began adding and subtracting layers of paint using a palette knife and stylus. Often\, her scraping left open canvas weave\, a visual trope seen in much of her later work. Schjerfbeck’s career spanned nearly 70 years; she did not stop painting until her dying days. The final self-portraits chronicling her physical decline stand among the most remarkable self-studies seen anywhere in the history of art. \n$25 — Lecture\n$65 — Lecture plus purchase of Dita Amory’s book Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck\n$45 — Purchase of Dita Amory’s book Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck \nLocation – Cole Studio\, South Entrance and parking lot.\n84 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme
