Grown-Up Grilled Cheese at the Whey Stationary, Middletown

The Whey Station Food Truck has been trolling the byways of CT for the last ten years, doling out gooey grilled cheese to hungry lunchers. The Chopped alum owners opened the aptly named Whey Stationary on Main Street a couple of years ago, but it fell off our radar during COVID. Now you no longer have to chase the truck down to get your cheese fix, so Laura and I stopped in for lunch last week. We had no trouble choosing ours: The Channing Tater, a drool-worthy combo of their signature Monger 5-cheese mix, bacon, scallions, sour cream, and TATER TOTS! It’s one kooky sandwich, but so much fun. Everything, including mac and cheese and tater tots every way, is a bit over-the-top here, but that’s the point. Classicists can go for the straight-ahead Monger Mix on country bread, but why when you can indulge in something like Cordon Bleu (grilled cheese, fried chicken, ham, and dijonnaise)? Wash it down with a selection of local beer or cider on tap, hard Kombucha, or Avery soda. Great kids menu, too. Well, just about everyone will feel like a kid in here.
