SUMMARY:Madison Lyric Stage Presents Amadeus
DESCRIPTION:Madison Lyric Stage\, a professional theater company on the Connecticut shoreline\, presents Peter Shaffer’s suspenseful\, music-filled drama Amadeus July 18 – August 3. The history\, legacy and rivalry of classical music giants\, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri\, explode in a story filled with jealousy\, revenge\, malice and scandal. \nPeter Shaffer’s Amadeus is a reimagining of the lives of 18th century musical rivals Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The play\, brought to life with the music of Mozart\, is a tale of jealousy and betrayal…and perhaps even murder. The story opens in 1825 on the eve of the elderly Salieri’s death. A rumor has begun to circulate in Vienna that 34 years earlier Salieri had poisoned his rival Mozart. No one knows whether to believe it\, or why Salieri might have wanted to murder Mozart. \nFull of pomp and pageantry\, Amadeus is a brilliantly funny and sometimes tragic examination of a man at war with his God. Salieri\, in the long shadow of Mozart’s undeniable genius\, cannot forgive his Creator for endowing him with comparative mediocrity. Winner of five Tony Awards\, including Best Play\, Amadeus ran for more than 1\,000 performances on Broadway\, and was made into a major motion picture\, winning eight Academy Awards\, including Best Picture. \n“This play wrestles with huge ideas\, huge emotions\, and is set to the astonishing music of Mozart\,” says Marc Deaton\, artistic director of Madison Lyric Stage. “Salieri does everything right to earn the love of his God\, but God bestows the far greater musical gifts on Mozart\, who is infantile\, profane and indifferent to God’s very existence. In fact\, Amadeus\, Mozart’s middle name\, in Latin literally means “loved by God.” \nThe production is directed by Marc Deaton\, and features John Johmann as Salieri\, Nathaniel Baker as Mozart\, Allison Waggener as Constanze\, and Daniel Dykes as Joseph II. \nTickets are $55\, click to reserve your seat. P \nerformance times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 pm\, and Sundays at 4:00 pm at the historic Deacon John Grave House\, located at 581 Boston Post Road in Madison.

SUMMARY:Madison Lyric Stage Presents The Seven Deadly Sins and Curlew River
DESCRIPTION:The first production of Madison Lyric Stage’s 2022 10th anniversary mainstage season will be a double bill of Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins and Benjamin Britten’s Curlew River May 12-15. The performance will be held in Madison Lyric Stage’s brand-new deluxe tent on the grounds of the Deacon John Grave House. Performance times are Thursday\, Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 5:00pm. \nThe Seven Deadly Sins by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht tells the story of Anna\, who is sent on a seven-year journey through seven American cities to earn enough money for her family to build a house. Anna is torn between the need to make money and her morals\, and as such has a split personality – so much so that she is played by two different women. The Seven Deadly Sins is described as a “sung ballet” and incorporates both song and dance. \nCurlew River by Benjamin Britten with text by William Plomer\, is known as a ‘parable for church performance’ and is one of three church parables written by Britten. It tells the story of the Madwoman and Traveler who cross the Curlew River on the Ferryman’s boat to find the Madwoman’s missing child. During the journey\, the Ferryman tells the story of a boy who mysteriously arrived a year ago with a cruel master who had kidnapped him. When the boy died\, he asked to be buried by the path to the local chapel. Curlew River is based on the Japanese Noh play Sumidagawa (Sumida River) and is told through three main characters\, all performed by male singers\, which is the style of Noh theater. \n“I am so delighted to present these two magnificent works that are rarely seen in Connecticut\, said Marc Deaton\, artistic director of Madison Lyric Stage. “The Seven Deadly Sins is a perfect example of music from the Weimar Republic\, with a social commentary on American rural life in the 1930’s. The church parable Curlew River reflects the universal Judeo-Christian traditions of people’s relationship with God\, community and the dignity of human life.” \nTickets are $55 and can be purchased by visiting madisonlyricstage.org or by calling 203-215-6329. The Deacon John Grave House is located at 581 Boston Post Road in Madison. \nThe Madison Lyric Stage 2022 season continues in June with the Stephen Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd\, followed by Stephen Schwartz’s musical Pippin in July\, and Edward Albee’s play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in September.

SUMMARY:Puccini's Suor Angelica at the Deacon John Grave House
DESCRIPTION:Puccini’s beloved one-act opera Suor Angelica (“Sister Angelica”) is playing at Madison’s Deacon John Grave House! Containing moments of harrowing drama and unequaled redemptive beauty\, Sister Angelica\, a Florentine noblewoman\, has been forced by her family to enter a convent after giving birth to a child out of wedlock – and for seven years has in vain waited for tidings from her family. Suor Angelica will be performed in Italian with English subtitles; Erwartung will be performed in English. On the grounds of the Deacon John Grave House in Madison.
