SUMMARY:ECSO November 18 Concert: Dvořák & Bartók
DESCRIPTION:The guest artist at the ECSO’s November 18 concert will be Hyung Joon Won\, a South Korean-born\, Juilliard School-trained violinist\, who will perform Antonín Dvořák’s impassioned Violin Concerto in A Minor\, composed in 1879. In 2009\, Won\, who hopes to form an inter-Korean orchestra with North Korean members\, founded the Lindenbaum Festival Orchestra\, an annual music festival in South Korea promoting the message of peace and harmony through music. In 2018\, ECSO Music Director & Conductor Toshiyuki Shimada joined Won in the Demilitarized Zone in South Korea for a Peace Concert\, which featured members of the Yale Symphony and young musicians from South Korea\, China\, Japan\, and Tunisia. \nPrior to the Dvořák\, the concert will open with the overture to L’Amant Anonyme (The Anonymous Lover)\, a 1780 comic opera by Joseph Bologne\, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Fencer\, dancer\, violinist\, and conductor\, Saint Georges\, a contemporary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, is considered the first acclaimed classical composer of African descent. \nAfter intermission\, the ECSO will play Béla Bartók’s five-movement Concerto for Orchestra\, which had its premiere in 1944 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Serge Koussevitzky. The piece makes use throughout of folk melodies from Bartók’s native Hungary—which he left for New York in 1940—also quoting a song from Franz Lehár’s operetta The Merry Widow in the humorous fourth movement\, the “interrupted intermezzo.”

SUMMARY:Ballet Hispánico at The Garde Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:On October 6th\, the Garde Arts Center will be featuring Ballet Hispánico\, the largest Latine/Latinx/Hispanic cultural organization in the United States and one of America’s Cultural Treasures. Ballet Hispánico’s three main programs\, the Company\, School of Dance\, and Community Arts Partnerships\, bring communities together to celebrate the multifaceted Latinx diasporas. Ballet Hispánico’s New York City headquarters provide the physical home and cultural heart for Latine dance in the United States. It is a space that initiates new cultural conversations and explores the intersectionality of Latine cultures. No matter their background or identity – Latine\, Latinx\, Hispanic – Ballet Hispánico welcomes and serves all\, breaking stereotypes and celebrating the beauty and diversity of Hispanic cultures through dance. \nDance visionary and National Medal of Arts recipient Tina Ramirez founded Ballet Hispánico in 1970\, at the height of the post-war civil rights movements. From its inception Ballet Hispánico focused on providing a haven for Black and Brown families seeking place and artistic sanctuary. By creating the space for Latine dance and dancers to flourish\, Ballet Hispánico uplifted marginalized artists and youth\, which combined with the training\, cultural pride\, and the power of representation\, fueled the organization’s roots and trajectory. Eduardo Vilaro joined Ballet Hispánico as a Company dancer in 1985 and became the organization’s second Artistic Director in 2009 and CEO in 2015. Vilaro is building on Ramirez’s impact; expanding\, and deepening the legacy of visibilizing Latine cultures\, and exposing the intersectionality and depth of diversity found in them. \nThrough its exemplary artistry\, distinguished training program\, and deep-rooted community engagement\, Ballet Hispánico champions and amplifies Latinx voices in the field. For over fifty years Ballet Hispánico has provided a place of honor for the omitted\, overlooked\, and othered. As it looks to the future\, Ballet Hispánico is pushing the culture forward on issues of dance and Hispanic creative expression. \nClick for tickets.

SUMMARY:Croce Plays Croce at the Garde Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:A.J. Croce performs Croce Plays Croce\, a special night of music featuring a complete set of classics by his late father Jim Croce\, some of his own tunes\, and songs that influenced both him and his father. This special event features such timeless songs as “Operator\,” “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim\,” “Time in a Bottle\,” (a song written for A.J.)\, “Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy)\, and “Lovers Cross”\, to name a few. Classic covers may include songs by Lieber and Stoller\, Bessie Smith\, and other folk and roots artists. \nJim Croce was an American folk singer with a short-lived professional recording and touring career\, and decades of posthumous fame as one of the greatest songwriters and artists ever. With sales surpassing 50 million records\, including three #1 songs and 10 Top 10 hits\, Jim Croce’s short career and long-lived legacy are well-remembered through his era-defining standards like “Operator\,” Time in a Bottle\,” and “Bad\, Bad Leroy Brown.” \nA.J. Croce’s 30-year touring and recording career has produced ten studio albums that have been released via both major and independent labels\, and have charted 20 Top 20 singles and all ten albums on the radio including on Top 40\, Americana\, and Blues. \nA virtuoso piano player\, he has performed at a TED Talk and gave a master class at the University of Barcelona. Croce has performed on major talk shows and news programs including The Late Show\, The Tonight Show\, The Today Show\, CNN\, MTV\, and VH1. He’s toured with such esteemed artists as Willie Nelson\, Lenny Kravitz\, Earth\, Wind\, and Fire\, and B.B. King. \nWhile his last album\, Just Like Medicine\, paired him with producer and soul legend Dan Penn and an all-star cast of players and guests like Vince Gill and Steve Cropper\, his new album was born of memories — of favorite artists and shows\, but mostly\, of late-night gatherings with groups of friends\, many of them fellow musicians\, with Croce at the piano taking requests. Croce revisits these musical evenings on By Request (out on Compass Records) with 12 personally curated covers that traverse decades and genres\, propelled by his spirited\, piano mastery and emotive vocals. \nWith a rich catalog of original compositions A.J. first recorded and released a composition of his fathers with a never-before-recorded song “Name of the Game” on his Just Like Medicine release. In 2018 he covered the 1973 hit “I Got A Name” for a Goodyear commercial with Dale Earnhardt Jr. \nThis performance is generously sponsored by Nutmeg Building & Remodeling LLC.

SUMMARY:Winter Cinema\, Speed Dating LIVE and More at The Garde
DESCRIPTION:In the heart of downtown New London\, CT the nonprofit Garde Arts Center is home for the performing arts and the owner of the nationally acclaimed historic 1400-seat Garde Theater with its distinctive Mediterranean decor. The Garde was built as a movie and vaudeville theater in the 1920s when movie palaces were America’s entertainment living room. In 1929\, Warner Bros purchased the theater for $1 million to install the new “talking picture” technology. One of the most popular theaters in the region\, it was sold in 1976\, as downtown movie palaces were being demolished – victims of television\, multiplexes\, and suburban sprawl. The theater was saved from demolition by the community when the newly incorporated Garde Arts Center purchased the theater in 1985. \nSince then\, the Garde has brought millions of people together for the best in movies\, live music\, theater\, educational and community programming\, dance\, and more. From Bob Dylan and the London Symphony Orchestra to the New London Talent Show to the latest movies on the Garde’s giant screen with state-of-the-art digital cinema — coming full circle (and then some) from its movie palace days. \nHISTORY OF THE GARDE \nhttps://gardearts.org/about/#history \nBREEZELINE 2022 WINTER CINEMA SERIES \nhttps://gardearts.org/events/2022-winter-cinema-series-pass/ \n2022 EVENT SCHEDULE \nhttps://gardearts.org/events/ \nRENT THE GARDE MARQUEE \nhttps://gardearts.org/rent-the-garde-marquee/ \nSUPPORT THE GARDE \nhttps://gardearts.org/support/

SUMMARY:Eastern Connecticut Ballet Presents “The Nutcracker”
DESCRIPTION:Eastern Connecticut Ballet is bringing the timeless and beloved “Nutcracker” back to the stage and big screen this year in a unique multimedia production combining live and filmed performances which prioritize the safety of all dancers and audiences! \nThe classic “Nutcracker” ballet has been captivating and charming audiences for centuries. Tchaikovsky’s celebrated music carries the audience through an enchanting journey as Clara and her new friend\, the Nutcracker\, travel through a world of splendor\, magic\, mystery\, and sweets! \nJust like Clara and the Nutcracker\, dancers and audiences have been longing for an adventure during these difficult times; something magical that\, for a brief moment\, feels like a dream! After a year without the “Nutcracker\,” Eastern Connecticut Ballet has created an occasion for the community to come together once again for this classic holiday tradition – but in a totally new and unique way! \nThe performance will begin with young Eastern Connecticut Ballet dancers on the big screen after being filmed at the Garde Arts Center in November! And then\, like magic\, special guest artists Sara Mearns (Sugar Plum Fairy)\, Russell Janzen (Cavalier)\, and Unity Phelan (Dew Drop Fairy) from New York City Ballet will appear LIVE on the Garde Arts Center stage accompanied by featured Eastern Connecticut Ballet dancers! ECB is incredibly fortunate and grateful to have a continued relationship with dancers from New York City Ballet. ECB Artistic Director\, Gloria Govrin\, performed under the direction of George Balanchine\, and has been directing the “Nutcracker” for decades. The performance this year will be new to audiences\, as well as to dancers and artistic staff! \nSeventy-five of Eastern Connecticut Ballet’s professionally trained dancers will get the chance to dance in “The Nutcracker” this year\, and audiences will see all the memorable characters like the magician Uncle Drosselmeyer\, the clownish Mother Ginger\, tiny mice\, the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier\, sailors\, pirates\, waltzing flowers\, dancing snowflakes and more! Set in old seafaring New London in the 1850’s\, ECB’s “The Nutcracker” brings local history and the arts to the Greater New London community! \nThis hybrid\, multimedia design will ensure the safety of all dancers\, guest artists\, Garde Arts Center staff\, and audiences. Eastern Connecticut Ballet and the Garde Arts Center have taken numerous COVID-19 safety precautions in order to safely and effectively present this production. The Garde Arts Center requires all staff\, students\, and volunteers to be fully vaccinated in order to participate in the live performance. By filming Act I of “The Nutcracker”\, Eastern Connecticut Ballet will be able to include younger dancers in the production who are not yet able to be vaccinated. A fourth show has been added to allow for limited seating with appropriate spacing to safely accommodate for our families\, friends\, and audience members. Patrons of the Garde will also be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test within 72 hours upon entrance to the lobby on the day of the performance. \nJoin the Garde Arts Center December 11th at 1:30pm and 7:00pm\, and December 12th at 11:00am and 4:30pm! \nTo share all of the magic of “The Nutcracker” with friends and family this December\, visit gardearts.org/events/the-nutcracker/ or call the Garde box office at 860-444-7373\, Ext 1\n______________________________________________________________________________ \nEastern Connecticut Ballet is a nonprofit organization and one of the state’s premiere schools for dance. www.easternctballet.org

SUMMARY:Judy Collins and Arlo Guthrie at The Garde
DESCRIPTION:Tickets purchased for the original July 25\, 2020 date are valid for the same seats for this rescheduled performance. \nFor over 50 years\, Judy Collins has thrilled audiences with her unique blend of interpretive folk songs and contemporary from the 60’s to the present. Arlo Guthrie’s timeless stories and unforgettable classic songs carry on the Guthrie family legacy with his singular voice as both a singer-songwriter and social commentator. \nJudy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals\, boldly vulnerable songwriting\, personal life triumphs\, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960’s\, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later\, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 55-album body of work\, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. \nArlo Guthrie made a name for himself in the 60’s with the iconic “Alice’s Restaurant” and provided perhaps the most often repeated phrase from Woodstock (“The New York State Thruway is closed\, man.”) With over 30 albums in his discography\, an Arlo Guthrie show delivers an astounding time capsule from the works of his dad\, Woody Guthrie\, to the present day.
