SUMMARY:Portrait\, Likeness\, Type: Jean-Léon Gérôme’s Bashi-Bazouk at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts
DESCRIPTION:Join Lyme Academy of Fine Arts on Saturday\, March 7\, for a special guest lecture\, Portrait\, Likeness\, Type: Jean-Léon Gérôme’s Bashi-Bazouk\, presented by Asher Miller\, Curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The lecture will be followed by a brief conversation with Emily M. Weeks\, Ph.D.\, Lyme Academy’s Principal Art Historian\, and a preview of Lyme Academy’s newest exhibition\, The New Bronze Age: Masterpieces of 19th- and Early 20th-Century Sculpture from the Karlheinz Kronberger Collection. A reception with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will conclude the evening. \nThis talk reveals hidden layers of a painting that presents as a convincing depiction of a Black Ottoman mercenary. Its painter\, the consummate nineteenth-century French academic artist Jean-Léon Gérôme\, employed a model and accessories to stage the composition in his Paris studio. Gérôme had traveled to the Middle East\, but what other factors contributed to his process of pictorial invention? And while Bashi-Bazouk is undoubtedly the product of traditional practice\, might it have more in common with vanguard painting of its time than meets the eye? \nPreview Event\n5 pm – Guest lecture\, Portrait\, Likeness\, Type: Jean-Léon Gérôme’s Bashi-Bazouk\, with Asher Miller\, the Eugene V. Thaw Curator of European Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, in the Academy’s Cole Studio\n6:15 pm – Exhibition Preview & Reception in the Academy’s Chauncey-Stillman Gallery \nEvent tickets are available online for $100 per guest.\nProceeds from this event support Lyme Academy’s Chauncey-Stillman Exhibition Program and all future Academy exhibitions.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck with MET Curator Dita Amory at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts
DESCRIPTION:Join Lyme Academy of Fine Arts on Friday\, February 27\, 2026\, at 5:00 pm for “An Introduction to Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck”\, a guest lecture and book signing with Dita Amory\, Robert Lehman Curator in Charge at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. \nThis lecture\, presented by Metropolitan Museum of Art Curator Dita Amory\, will introduce the Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946). Renowned throughout Finland\, she is little known in the US. The Metropolitan Museum is the first major US museum to present her work. The exhibition of paintings was designed to present passages in the life of the artist\, tracing a remarkable career from her Paris training in naturalism to her growing abstraction in later years. In addition to developing her own brand of modernism\, Schjerfbeck grew increasingly preoccupied with her materials and their application on canvas. She began adding and subtracting layers of paint using a palette knife and stylus. Often\, her scraping left open canvas weave\, a visual trope seen in much of her later work. Schjerfbeck’s career spanned nearly 70 years; she did not stop painting until her dying days. The final self-portraits chronicling her physical decline stand among the most remarkable self-studies seen anywhere in the history of art. \n$25 — Lecture\n$65 — Lecture plus purchase of Dita Amory’s book Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck\n$45 — Purchase of Dita Amory’s book Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck \nLocation – Cole Studio\, South Entrance and parking lot.\n84 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme

SUMMARY:Still Life Painting: Sustained Observation With Edmond Praybe
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever considered the role of change and time in your painting? During this three-day workshop you will discover this\, and more as you are guided in positioning your own still life and painting directly from these individual arrangements. You will focus on creating one painting sustained over the duration of this workshop. As an artist who places an emphasis on the importance of still life setups in his own work\, Edmond Praybe will guide you in learning how to set up your still life\, to look for color and value relationships\, and to examine the abstract structure you can create in your own paintings. \nThis workshop is open to all levels\, but some basic painting experience is recommended. Image presentations will supplement workshop demonstrations and instructed work time. \nMay 20\, 21\, and 22\, 2022 (Friday\, Saturday\, Sunday)\, 9 am-4 pm\, with a one-hour lunch break 12-1 pm \nEdmond Praybe is a painter concerned with the convergence of perception and abstraction. His work pairs intense direct observation of the motif with abstractions of structure\, rhythm\, shape\, and color. He received his BFA from Maryland Institute\, College of Art\, and his MFA from the New York Studio School. Edmond’s work has been shown widely at juried and invitational exhibitions. He has been the recipient of the Hohenberg Travel Grant\, two Mercedes Matter Awards\, and was a National Parks Artist-in-Residence at Catoctin Mountain Park. He is a member of Zeuxis: an Association of Still Life Painters and is currently represented by Tregony Gallery in Cornwall\, UK\, First Street Gallery in New York City\, and Peterson Contemporary in Bend\, OR. \nMore info here.

SUMMARY:Principles of Landscape Painting
DESCRIPTION:Learn the foundations of successful plein air landscape painting in a storied and picturesque setting. Guided instruction will address theories of value\, mass\, composition\, representing light and color\, optical effects encountered outdoors\, perspective\, and more. Morning demonstrations will include painting basics\, from composition to completion of individual landscape paintings. Artist Patrick Okrasinski will employ both academic and Impressionist principles\, sharing how to incorporate these into independent and original landscape paintings. \nStudents who participate in both Workshop series will explore the curriculum concepts in depth\, while working on a multi-day landscape painting. The process of making a successful landscape painting\, from pencil sketch to color-comp study to a larger work of art\, will be demonstrated and explained. \nTaking place in the historic town of Old Lyme\, Connecticut\, the “home of American Impressionism\,” the Workshop will build connections between 19th-century academic training\, Impressionism\, New England schools of painting at the turn of the century\, and representational painting today. \nNOTE: Workshop enrollment will include a tour of the historic grounds of the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme\, Connecticut\, and the original boarding house for artists where American Impressionism began. This one-hour event will be led by Emily M. Weeks\, Ph.D.\, Principal Art Historian at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts\, and will be scheduled during Workshop hours. \nPatrick Okrasinski first enrolled at the former US branch of the Florence Academy of Art in Jersey City\, New Jersey\, in 2016\, where he studied drawing and painting under Jordan Sokol\, Amaya Gurpide\, Edmond Rochat\, Stephen Bauman\, and Cornelia Hermes. There he practiced traditional skills-based methods while simultaneously pursuing landscape painting. \nDuring the summer of 2019\, Patrick spent three months as Artist-in-Residence in Giverny\, working at Monet’s gardens and in the surrounding French countryside\, made famous by the Impressionists. \nIn 2020 Patrick was awarded the prestigious Donald Jurney Traveling Fellowship\, which allowed him to pursue his artistic and academic studies in the great historic and cultural centers of Europe. In 2021\, he was part of a select group of painters accepted into the Hudson River Fellowship at Wethersfield\, CT. \nDates:\nWeek 1: Monday\, May 16 – Friday\, May 20\, 9am-4pm\nWeek 2: Monday\, May 23 – Friday\, May 27\, 9am-4pm

SUMMARY:Painting the Still Life with Todd Casey
DESCRIPTION:Learn the fundamentals of still life painting in the inspiring studios of the Lyme Academy. Guided instruction will address composition\, drawing\, light\, color theory\, form\, depth\, edges\, and how to introduce narrative elements into a painting based on the direct and focused observation of 2-4 selected objects. Workshop demonstrations will include the “direct method” approach\, starting with a charcoal under-drawing and building up a painting in stages. Morning demonstrations and lectures will be followed by individual instruction\, ensuring that each student’s still life painting is developed and completed. \nTodd M. Casey was born and raised in Lowell\, Massachusetts. He earned his BFA in Communication Design from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston\, Massachusetts. Casey’s work is both realistic and progressive\, carefully observed and inherently narrative. Every painting has a tale to tell\, brewed from a deep well of introspective thought. Recently Casey has made the transition to author and teacher. He published his first art book\, The Art of Still Life\, in 2020 with Monacelli Press. His second book\, The Oil Painters’ Color Handbook\, will be available in August 2022. \nDates: Friday\, April 22 – Sunday\, April 24\, 9am-4pm. \nhttps://lymeacademy.edu/product/painting-the-still-life-with-todd-casey/
