SUMMARY:Guest Lecture & Reception – “In the Studios of Paris: American Art Students at the French Academies\, 1876 – 1900”
DESCRIPTION:Join the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts on Saturday\, April 12 at 4 pm for “In the Studios of Paris: American Art Students at the French Academies\, 1876–1900\,” a guest lecture by Mark D. Mitchell\, Holcombe T. Green Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at Yale University Art Gallery. A wine & beer reception will follow in our on-campus art gallery\, with an opportunity to view our newest exhibition\, True to Form: Academic Figure Studies from the Late 19th to Early 20th Centuries. \nDuring the late nineteenth century\, nearly every young American artist’s professional ambitions led straight to Paris. In the wake of the Franco-Prussian War and America’s Centennial\, Paris emerged as the primary artistic training ground of Europe and a generation of American students came of age there. Focused on the careers of leading artists of the era\, including Kenyon Cox\, Frederick MacMonnies\, John Singer Sargent\, and Julian Alden Weir\, this talk will explore what budding American artists found when they arrived in Paris\, what being an American art student abroad meant at the time\, and how the experience shaped their ideas of art. \nClick for tickets: $30 each (includes Lecture\, Reception\, Exhibition Viewing) \n84 Lyme Street\, use SOUTH entrance for parking and entrance.

SUMMARY:Cirque De La Vie featuring the work of Bo Bartlett
DESCRIPTION:Cirque De La Vie is the latest in a series of original exhibitions at the Lyme Academy\, each of which celebrates the history and development of representational and figurative art. The exhibition continues through June 30\, 2023\, at the Lyme Academy’s Chauncey Stillman Gallery. Admission is free. \nThe Lyme Academy of Fine Arts is pleased to announce the May 6th opening of its latest exhibition\, Cirque De La Vie\, featuring the work of influential American artist Bo Bartlett. The recipient of numerous awards and international recognition for his paintings and films\, Bartlett’s work has been celebrated for its ability to elevate the trivialities of everyday life to epic proportions and to bring its grandest expressions back down to earth\, in ways that are both uncanny and personally meaningful. Through this play between the individual and archetypal\, Bartlett pushes the boundaries of realism\, and the possibilities of representational art. \nFor additional information visit: lymeacademy.edu \nAll works in the exhibition are available for purchase.\nPlease call 860.434.5232 for more information. \nChauncey Stillman Gallery\nGallery Hours Wednesday–Sunday 10 am to 4 pm
