SUMMARY:Lyme Artisans Guild: Revitalizing Craft History on the Shoreline
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, the newly-established Lyme Artisans Guild will kick off its rejuvenation of an artisan tradition on the shoreline at the Old Lyme Midsummer Festival on July 29th. \nWhile Old Lyme has long been known as a fine arts mecca\, less well known is the fact that fine crafts were featured by the Old Lyme Guild of Artists and Craftsmen as part of the sweeping international Arts and Crafts Movement. Beatrice Hoffman—wool dyer\, photographer\, weaver\, mosaicist\, enameler\, and wife of local painter Harry Hoffman—led the founding of the 1930s Guild. In the Guild’s studios at the Old Peck Tavern on Sill Lane\, once visited by George Washington\, the public could view and purchase finely crafted furniture\, ceramics\, ironwork\, metalware\, and other functional and decorative objects made by the Guild’s members. \nOn July 29th\, visit the tent of the new Lyme Artisans Guild on the lawn of the Lyme Art Association to see local hand-forged silver jewelry by Michaelle Pearson\, pottery by Wayne Kirk\, textile creations by Carol Hunts Stanland\, hand-made ceramic tiles by Lilywork Tiles\, weaving by Susan Morrison\, metal sculptures by Sherry Block\, and wood-turned bowls by Paul Maulucci. \nDon’t forget to visit the Lyme Artisans Guild Facebook page to keep informed about their upcoming events\, see artist profiles\, and more.

SUMMARY:An Exhibition in Four Acts
DESCRIPTION:Lyme Art Association Presents “Four Acts”\, Exploring Views of the World through Art \nThe Lyme Art Association invites you to its historic galleries this March to see “Four Acts”\, an exhibition showcasing the diversity of styles created by its talented member artists. Each juried show looks at the world through a different lens: “Long and Lean”\, “Abstracted”\, “Off the Press” and “Stillness: A Still Life”. \n“Long and Lean” features artworks with a 2:1 or 3:1 minimum ratio. From long sweeping landscapes to narrow vertical cityscapes\, this exhibition contemplates how a picture’s shape affects its meaning. Long and Lean is juried by Connecticut artist\, Rick Shaefer\, known for his large scale black and white artwork. \n“Abstracted” focuses on nonrepresentational and nonobjective art. Juried by renowned painter Cary Smith\, the exhibition explores the abstractions of life and the internal moments between artists and their materials. \n“Off the Press” is all about printmaking\, highlighting a variety of techniques and media in the print medium. The show is juried by printmaker Nomi Silverman\, whose work is in the collection of numerous museums and collections around the country and abroad\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, The New York Public Library and The William Benton Museum of Art. \n“Stillness: A Still Life” is an ode to the artistic practice of making the ordinary extraordinary. For millennia\, artists have practiced their skills by painting objects found around the home and giving those objects meaning. Juried by Providence-based painter and psychologist\, Judy Vilmain\, the exhibition is an introspection into the world of still life. \n“Four Acts” runs from March 10 through April 27\, 2023. Meet the artists and mingle with friends at the opening reception on Sunday\, March 12 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. \nAbout the Lyme Art Association: The Lyme Art Association is a welcoming and thriving fine arts community founded in 1914 by the American Impressionists of Old Lyme. Located in an historic\, skylit 1921 building with a world-class gallery and art education studio\, LAA exhibits over 2\,000 paintings and sculptures each year in up to fifteen themed\, juried shows. LAA offers art instruction\, enrichment programs\, and other public programs to the community\, supporting artists at every level of their journey and cultivating a love of fine art. \nAdmission is free with contributions appreciated. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday\, 10 – 5pm\, or by appointment. \nFor more information on exhibits\, purchase of art\, art classes\, or becoming a member\, visit our website www.lymeartassociation.org or call (860) 434-7802. \nImage: Diane Brown\, “Tranquility #1”\, oil and cold wax

SUMMARY:Point of View: 101st Annual Elected Artists Show and True Blue
DESCRIPTION:Image: Christine Ivers\, The Morning Stretch\, pastel \nLyme Art Association is proud to announce Point of View\, the 101st Annual Elected Artists Show. This exhibition showcases the best of the best in representational art from our Elected Artists\, who are our most accomplished artists and the torch-bearers for the American representational tradition. They follow directly in the footsteps of the Lyme Art Colony artists who hung their Tonalist and Impressionist works on the walls of the local library in 1901. This is an exhibition that should not be missed. \nRunning concurrently is True Blue. Considered beneficial to the mind and body\, the color blue elicits a sense of tranquility and healing. We challenged our Associated Artists to submit work where blue is the predominant or most significant color in their piece. This ode to blue will be a visual feast for viewers. \nBoth shows are proudly sponsored by Chelsea Groton Bank\, our Supporting Sponsor. \nPoint of View and True Blue are on view from August 12 – September 22\, 2022 at the Lyme Art Association\, 90 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, Connecticut\, and are open to the public. The gallery is open from 10 am to 5 pm\, Wednesday through Sunday\, and by appointment. \nImage: Christine Ivers\, The Morning Stretch\, pastel
