SUMMARY:Film Screening of "Honeyland" and Local Honey Tasting at the Lyme Public Hall
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 documentary film “Honeyland” was one of the first to compete at the Oscars for both best documentary and best international feature film. It tells the story of Hatidze Muratova\, one of Macedonia’s last wild beekeepers\, who uses traditional methods\, passed down through generations\, for harvesting wild honey. \nDirectors Tamara Kotevska and Ljubo Stefanov were researching in a remote mountainous area for a short nature documentary. They noticed beehives behind a rock on the mountain where they were filming\, which led them to Hatidze and began what became three years of filming\, plus another year of editing. Honeyland chronicles Hatidze’s ancient methods of beekeeping and how they clashed with the practices of a new neighboring family. This beautifully filmed story has themes of conservation and human relationships in addition to beekeeping and honey. The directors commented that making this film profoundly changed their lives. \nLyme Public Hall will be screening Honeyland on Sunday\, November 2 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, and also hosting local beekeepers from Lyme\, East Lyme\, Old Lyme and East Haddam who will bring their local honey for a tasting experience. \nNext to scenic Hamburg Cove; parking available behind the building or at the church next door if lot is full.

SUMMARY:The Other Side of the Ice: Sprague Theobald’s Northwest Passage at Lyme Public Hall
DESCRIPTION:In 2009\, Hadlyme resident Sprague Theobald\, an award-winning documentary filmmaker\, actor and expert sailor\, set out with a small crew on a 57-foot trawler to find and navigate the infamous Northwest Passage\, the Arctic Sea route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. Since its discovery in the 1800’s\, many have died trying to navigate this ship-killing shorter route between the oceans. Theobald faced a journey filled with danger from ice and severe weather as well as personality clashes that threatened to tear the crew apart. In completing the Passage\, he and his crew became only the 24th non-military craft to navigate the route since Roald Amundsen’s first successful crossing in 1906. Theobald’s Emmy Award-winning documentary\, “The Other Side of The Ice\,” chronicled his five-month\, 8000-mile trip through the high Arctic. Come meet this extraordinary neighbor and hear his first-hand recollections of the harrowing journey: tales of survival\, adventure and\, finally\, redemption. This special presentation is free and all are welcome! \nTheobald started his professional acting career at the age of eighteen with his debut in summer stock at the renowned Hampton Playhouse in New Hampshire. From there\, his work took him to Washington\, D.C.\, Boston\, New York City and ultimately Los Angeles. Along the way\, he studied with Lee Strasberg\, Patsy Rodenburg and The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. In the mid-’90s\, Theobald took a “part-time” job on a documentary. Twenty-five years and two Emmy Awards later\, for “The 25th Defense: End of An Era” and “The Other Side of The Ice\,” Theobald has returned to his first passion\, acting. He can be seen in two upcoming independent films: “Is It A Crime” and “The Cabin” as well as “Bull\,” “Law & Order: SVU” and AppleTV’s new hit series\, “Extrapolations.” \nLyme Public Hall is at 249 Hamburg Road (Route 156) in Lyme. Parking available behind building. \nClick to learn more.

SUMMARY:Ending Epidemics with Richard Conniff at Lyme Public Hall
DESCRIPTION:What is the  single most dramatic change in all of human history? Richard Conniff has an idea about that. Join us at the Lyme Public Hall (249 Hamburg Rd. in Lyme) at 4:00 pm on Sunday\, October 8 to hear all about it as Conniff explains the research in his brand new book\, “Ending Epidemics\,” exploring how scientists saved humanity from the deadliest infectious diseases\, thus doubling average human life expectancy in less than a century. Conniff’s book tells the story behind “the mortality revolution\,” the dramatic transformation not just in our longevity\, but in the character of childhood\, family life\, and human society. Can this history help us to prepare ourselves for more future epidemics? \n“Ending Epidemics” has been chosen as a Next Big Idea Club feature. Richard Conniff is a National Magazine Award-winning writer for Smithsonian magazine\, The Atlantic\, National Geographic\, and other publications\, and a past Guggenheim Fellow. He has authored many successful books and has been a commentator on NPR’s Marketplace as well as a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times.
