SUMMARY:Old Crow Medicine Show's Holiday Hootenanny at The Garde
DESCRIPTION:For the very first time\, Old Crow Medicine Show is bringing a holiday tour to the stage! Join the GRAMMY-winning band for a festive night of foot-stompin’ Christmas classics\, fan-favorite Old Crow hits\, and songs from their brand-new holiday album. The band will be joined by special guest Bronwyn Keith-Hynes\, adding fiddle fire and holiday cheer to this one-of-a-kind celebration. \nOld Crow Medicine Show got their start busking on street corners in 1998\, from New York state and up through Canada\, winning audiences along the way with their boundless energy and spirit. They eventually found themselves in Boone\, North Carolina where they caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy. He invited the band to play at his festival\, MerleFest\, and the rest is history. It’s been over twenty years since these humble beginnings. The band has gone on to receive the honor of being inducted as members of the Grand Ole Opry and have won two Grammy Awards: “Best Folk Album” for Remedy(2014) and “Best Long Form Music Video” for Big Easy Express (2013). Additionally\, their classic single\, “Wagon Wheel”\, received theRIAA’s Double-Platinum certification in 2019 for selling over 2\,000\,000 copies while the band’s debut album O.C.M.S. has been certified Gold (500\,000 copies). The band’s latest Grammy Grammy-nominated album‘Jubilee’ (Aug 2023) released via ATORecords. \nOld Crow Medicine Show Stage Lineup \nKetch Secor– Fiddle\, harmonica\, guitar\, banjo\, vocals\nMorgan Jahnig– Upright bass\nCory Younts– Mandolin\, keyboards\, banjo\, harmonica\, vocals\nMike Harris– Slide guitar\, guitar\, mandolin\, banjo\, dobro\, guitjo\, vocals\nChance McCoy- Vocals\, guitar\, fiddle\, banjo\, mandolin\, dobro\nPJ George– Banjo\, accordion\, mandolin\, fiddle\, guitar\, guitjo\, drums \nSoutheastern Connecticut’s non-profit home for the performing arts\, cinema and education\, the Garde Arts Center was founded in 1985 to save\, restore and operate in the heart of downtown New London the historic (1926) Garde Theater and Building as a regional cultural gathering place and economic catalyst.

SUMMARY:ECSO Season-Opening Concert: Gershwin & Dixieland
DESCRIPTION:To kick off its 2023-24 season at the Garde Arts Center\, the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra will present a festive program of shorter works in several styles. This concert is generously sponsored by Olde Mistick Village. First up: a world premiere\, Monhegan Sunrise (Peace Fanfare)\, by Massachusetts-based composer Tom Myron\, inspired by dawn on the rocky Maine island. Originally a waltz for solo piano\, the 1893 Bal masqué by New Hampshire-born Amy Beach\, the first successful woman composer in the U.S.\, will follow\, depicting the spirited masked ball of the title. \nClosing out the first half\, the most famous clarinet “smear” in classical music will signal the start of George Gershwin’s jazz-influenced Rhapsody in Blue\, which turns 100 this year. Taking on the solo keyboard part that Gershwin himself played at the 1924 premiere—will be versatile Connecticut-based pianist Gary Chapman. Speaking of rhapsodies\, The Bamboula\, composed in 1905 by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor\, the son of an English mother and an African father\, is subtitled Rhapsodic Dance for Orchestra. \nThe evening will go out in New Orleans style\, with traditional jazz arrangements of familiar tunes performed by the Tom Brown 6\, a Dixieland band\, led by former ECSO Principal Trumpet Thomas Brown\, who was also a U.S. Coast Guard Band member since 2002 until his recent retirement. \nClick for tickets.

SUMMARY:Eastern Connecticut Ballet Presents "Ballerina Swan"
DESCRIPTION:“Ballerina Swan” spins the tale of a swan named Sophie who longs to leave her pond in the city park and become a ballerina. With huge wings and bright orange webbed feet\, Sophie faces unique challenges alongside human dancers in the classroom. Still\, her determination and passion help her achieve her dream: a role in Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake.” \nAdapted from the children’s book by Allegra Kent a former principal dancer with New York City Ballet\, this live performance brings both humor and charm to the award-winning story. \nEastern Connecticut Ballet is proud to be the region’s premier school for dance education. They teach their students to aspire to excellence\, a philosophy that drives everything they do. Educating dancers is the primary mission\, cultivating the appreciation of dance in our communities is a bonus.
