SUMMARY:Pasang: In the Shadow of Everest at The Kate

Her determined pursuit of Everest plays out within the context of her nation’s quest for democracy and the emergence of the commercial climbing industry. As told by the Nepalis who knew her\, by some of the world’s most notable alpinists\, and by Pasang herself\, PASANG: The Shadow of Everest\, documents her historic quest that would transfix her country and uplift a new generation’s belief in its possibilities. \nClick for tickets.

SUMMARY:Eastern Connecticut Ballet Presents Ballet Spooktacular
DESCRIPTION:Ballet Spooktacular at the Kate is a Treat! \nFor children who just can’t wait for Halloween\, Eastern Connecticut Ballet’s Spooktacular serves up a mix of “BOO-tiful” dancing\, clever costumes\, and a chance for young audiences to be a part of the fun. Guest Choreographer Krystin Dixon’s Dancing Bones will feature life-size\, glow-in-the-dark skeletons. No need to fear\, however: the phantasms are fascinating\, not frightening. \nChildren are invited to wear costumes to the event (and their parents\, too\, if they dare). Trick-or-treating through the decorated theater\, a parade across the stage and photo opportunities with cast members will follow the program. (So if you’ve got it\, haunt it!) \nNEW THIS YEAR! The house lights will be lowered slightly but remain on\, and big moments of loud sound and flashing lights will be reduced. Audience members will be free to talk and move about during the show\, and the costume parade will take place in front of the stage for additional ease.

SUMMARY:Judy Collins at The Kate
DESCRIPTION:Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals\, boldly vulnerable songwriting\, personal life triumphs\, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s\, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later\, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50-album body of work\, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. \nThe award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album\, Wildflowers\, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of “Send in the Clowns\,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music\, won “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards. SUMMARY:Salt Marsh Opera Presents Carmen at The Kate
DESCRIPTION:Carmen is one of the most famous operas in the world. But\, for Georges Bizet who composed this opera\, Carmen is his only operatic hit. Bizet died suddenly after the 33rd performance\, unaware that the work would achieve international acclaim within the following ten years. There are a lot of reasons why Carmen gained popularity. One of them is the fascinating music by Bizet. The music of Carmen has been widely acclaimed for brilliance of melody\, harmony\, atmosphere\, and orchestration\, and for the skill with which Bizet musically represented the emotions and suffering of his characters. Following a story of love and jealousy\, Carmen is a performance you won’t want to miss. Presented by the Salt Marsh Opera. \n

SUMMARY:The Sweet Remains at The Kate
DESCRIPTION:7:30 PM \nTHE SWEET REMAINS is the unusual band on today’s music scene to be headed by 3 gifted singer-songwriters\, each of whom contribute to the writing and 3-part harmonies that define the band’s sound. They are also the very rare independent band to claim over 38 MILLION Spotify plays world-wide (and counting). \nDriven by strong lyrical and melodic writing\, their songs easily appeal to fans of modern folk-rockers like Jason Mraz\, Ray Lamontagne\, and John Mayer. However\, it is their lush harmonies\, that distinguish tSR from the throngs of guitar-toting troubadours and harken back to super-groups of the 60’s and 70’s like CSN\, the Eagles\, Simon & Garfunkel. \n2018 adds a feature film to the band’s unique accomplishments. The Independents\, a musical comedy-drama created by and starring the band premiered Feb. 3rd at the distinguished Santa Barbara International Film Festival to the plaudits of festival-goers and The Hollywood Reporter\, which praised the film as “Extremely engaging… Unconventional and sharply written… Deserves to find an audience beyond the festival circuit.” \nTSR are Rich Price (Burlington\, VT)\, Greg Naughton (NYC) and Brian Chartrand (Phoenix\, AZ). Rich and Greg first collaborated on Rich’s 2004 Geffen Records debut — a CD that spawned his single “I’m on my way”\, featured on the multi-platinum Shrek 2 soundtrack. Hailed by Performing Songwriter Magazine as “a magnetic writer and performer\,” Greg has played his music all across this country in venues ranging from New Orleans grittiest\, to the east room of the White House. Brian’s journeys as an internationally touring singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist have taken him from South Hadley\, MA where he grew up to Phoenix\, AZ where he splits his time as a solo-artist and front-man of ‘The Project’ and ‘Live from Laurel Canyon.’ \nRamping up for their fourth career studio album due Q4 2019\, the TSR is releasing a new single each month through its’ social media platforms. The band’s releases to-date include the debut album Laurel & Sunset (2008)\, a live CD/DVD entitled Live at Canal Room (2012)\, second studio album North & Prospect (2013) and third studio album Night Songs (2015) \nBuy tickets here.

She was featured in the acclaimed Linda Ronstadt documentary: The Sound of My Voice\, highlighting her friendship with Linda and as the writer of several of her biggest songs\, including Grammy Winner\, “All My Life.” Bob Lefsetz\, a longtime fan\, interviewed her for his popular podcast and dug deep into her history as a pioneer of the Southern California Singer-Songwriter scene\, Trisha Yearwood’s new album includes a lovely rendition of Karla’s “Home\,” Mary Sue Toohey of The Village on Sirius/XM hosted a performance & interview\, and she was invited to sing on the longest-running radio program for acoustic music\, Acoustic Café. \n\nFans and critics agree that Bonoff’s songs are timeless as are her recordings. SUMMARY:Roger Mcguinn at The Kate
DESCRIPTION:8 PM \nJim McGuinn\, later known as Roger\, was already a veteran of the New York and Los Angeles music scenes when he co-founded the group that would become the Byrds with Gene Clark and David Crosby in 1964. Prior to forming the Byrds\, Roger toured and performed with the Limeliters\, Chad Mitchell Trio and Bobby Darin as a guitarist and banjo player. He was also the musical director on Judy Collins #3. McGuinn\, a Chicago native\, studied at the Old Town School of Folk Music and was active on Chicago’s folk scene. Within a few weeks of finishing high school\, he was in California with the Limeliters\, playing guitar and banjo on their album “Tonight: In Person.” He then toured with the Chad Mitchell Trio and recorded on their albums: “Mighty Day on Campus” and “The Chad Mitchell Trio at the Bitter End.” He toured with singer Bobby Darin\, and then moved to New York to work for Darin’s publishing company\, in the fabled Brill Building as a songwriter. He and Frank Gari co-wrote the song “Beach Ball” and performed it with Darin\, as the City Surfers\, July 1963. \nMcGuinn heard the Beatles for the first time at the Brill Building\, and began adding a Beatle beat to his favorite folk songs in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village. His experimental musical style didn’t please the folk purists\, so he moved to Los Angeles to work at the Troubadour opening for Hoyt Axton. It was there that Gene Clark approached Roger with an appreciation for his unusual musical blend. They joined their talents and began writing songs in the front room of the Troubadour\, then called the “Folk Den.” \nDavid Crosby walked in one day and joined them with his unique concepts of harmony. That third voice completed the underpinnings of one of the most influential bands of the ’60s. Within a few months\, McGuinn\, Clark & Crosby asked conga player Michael Clarke to join them as a drummer because he looked like two of the Rolling Stones. Mandolin player Chris Hillman was tapped to be the bass player. During a Thanksgiving dinner the band settled on the name “Byrds.” Columbia Records signed the Byrds in January\, 1965 and released their number one hit\, “Mr. Tambourine Man.” \nBuy tickets here.

SUMMARY:Amy Helm at The Kate
DESCRIPTION:7:30 PM \nSinger-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Amy Helm’s third album\, What the Flood Leaves Behind\, is her most autobiographical yet\, both in content and creation. Due out June 18th via Renew Records/BMG\, these 10 songs represent a gathering of ideas and experiences\, friends and collaborators. Yet\, the album also marks a landing — a pause for the traveling musician and mother of two young boys who was seeking clarity in her calling and career. \nAfter making multiple albums and performing in far-flung places\, Helm returned home to Woodstock’s Levon Helm Studios just before the pandemic to record What the Flood Leaves Behind and reclaim a sense of self. \n“Going back to the place where I learned so much about how to express music\, how to hold myself in music\, how to listen to music\,” she begins\, “it was humbling in a funny way. I could see clearly where I came from and where I am now in my life. I was singing from a different place now and for a different reason.” \nAn impressive group of friends and collaborators joins Helm on What the Flood Leaves Behind. With musical polyglot Josh Kaufman (whose credits range from Taylor Swift’s Folklore to the Grammy-nominated Bonny Light Horseman) producing and contributing on piano\, guitar\, and mandolin\, the record brings Helm’s powerful\, emotive vocals to the forefront of the album. \n“We tried to make it about her voice and about the musicians responding to her and not the other way around\,” explains Kaufman. “I wanted her to feel like she had that freedom to be herself on the recordings and she just filled up the whole room. Her singing was coming from this deeply rooted place of family and music and wanting to convey a beauty.” \nIn fact\, Helm considers Levon Helm Studios itself to be “the tuning fork” for the record — an ethereal\, elemental component that helped her and musicians Phil Cook (keys\, harmonica)\, Michael Libramento (bass\, organ\, percussion)\, Tony Mason (drums)\, Daniel Littleton (guitar)\, Stuart Bogie (saxophone)\, Jordan McLean (trumpet)\, and her son Lee Collins (congas) summon courage and comfort. \nThe songs themselves reflect Helm’s inner strength and personal growth. Some might even sound familiar: “Cotton and the Cain” is a pensive homage to those who raised her\, whom she calls\, “the village of brilliant and talented people who were also wrestling with the grips of addiction.” A fan favorite that previously took on many styles when performed live\, the song is now buoyed by her soaring soprano atop a whirring Wurlitzer. “Are We Running Out of Love\,” a freak-folk drone in the hands of Swedish guitarist and songwriter Daniel Norgren\, becomes an acoustic\, urgent plea. Additionally\, the album features collaborations with a number of prominent and prolific songwriters in roots music like Elizabeth Ziman (Elizabeth and The Catapult)\, Mary Gauthier\, Erin Rae\, and more. \nBut it’s “Verse 23\,” the song from which the album title is derived\, that encapsulates What the Flood Leaves Behind. Written by M.C. Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger) specifically for Helm\, the song opens gently as she beckons\, “Turn to Verse 23\, read the words on the page.” It’s a Psalm of David that declares\, “The Lord is my shepherd\, I shall not want.” \nFrom there\, the vivid\, narrative verses swell\, building up to a chorus with deep resonance for Helm. She repeats back the lyrics: What the flood leaves behind is what we’ve got to make. “I like that reckoning\,” she says\, “of the good and the bad and everything in between.” \n\nThroughout the record\, Helm sings stories of life’s relentlessness. But like she extrapolates from “Verse 23\,” the most productive\, and often the most healing response\, is to create. As a result\, What the Flood Leaves Behind serves as a defiant form of self-expression\, as Helm steps fully into her own light. \nPurchase tickets here.

SUMMARY:Jim Kweskin & Samoa Wilson at The Kate
DESCRIPTION:7:30 PM \nI Just Want To Be Horizontal\, the latest collaboration between vocalist Samoa Wilson and The Jim Kweskin Band\, focuses on music that Billie Holiday recorded with Teddy Wilson in the 1930s when Billie was still near the start of her career. The music is jazz\, but mixes in elements of folk and blues\, and we even get a Hawaiian pop number. The band is made up of Samoa Wilson on vocals; Jim Kweskin on vocals and guitar; Titus Vollmer on guitar and ukulele; Mike Davis on trumpet and cornet; Paloma Ohm on alto saxophone; Dennis Lichtman on clarinet\, fiddle\, mandolin and alto saxophone; Sonny Barbato on piano and accordion; Matthew Berlin on bass; and Jeff Brown on drums. \nJim Kweskin is the founder of the legendary 1960s Jim Kweskin Jug Band with Fritz Richmond\, Geoff Muldaur\, Maria Muldaur\, Bob Siggins and Bruno Wolfe. During the five years they were together\, they successfully transformed the sounds of pre-World War II rural music into a springboard for their good-humored performances. Their imitators were legion\, including a San Francisco jug band that became the Grateful Dead; a Los Angeles jug band that became the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and a New York jug band that became the Lovin’ Spoonful. But no other group attained their unique blend of youthful energy and antiquarian expertise\, tight musicianship\, loose camaraderie\, and infectious swing \nThese days Jim is best known as a singer and bandleader\, but he also created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival\, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Mississippi John Hurt and Pink Anderson to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. He has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days\, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist. He has recorded many solo ventures\, as a member of the U and I band\, with band-mate Geoff Muldaur\, with Samoa Wilson\, with The Texas Sheiks as well as performing and recording with a wide variety of well-known musicians such as Maria Muldaur\, John Sebastian\, David Grisman\, Cindy Cashdollar\, Happy Traum\, Meredith Axelrod\, Juli Crockett and Samoa Wilson to name a few. \nJim Kweskin’s shows radiate of charm\, humor\, sophistication\, as well as talent. Jim sings a collection of familiar songs by Benny Goodman\, Johnny Mercer\, the Sons of the Pioneers\, Fats Waller and Somethin’ Smith & the Redheads. There’s an endearing sense of good humor to Kweskin’s versions that makes his performances a charming delight. \nPurchase tickets here.

SUMMARY:Popa Chubby at The Kate
DESCRIPTION:7 PM \nPopa Chubby\, born Ted Horowitz\, has been hard rocking the blues in his fierce and soulful way for more than 25 years. Over the course of a career that dates back to 1994\, he has been a force of to be reckoned with on the guitar\, and his tempestuous\, soulful playing has never been more powerful. An imposing figure with a shaven head\, tattooed arms\, a goatee and a performance style he describes as “the Stooges meets Buddy Guy\, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters\, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson\,” Popa Chubby is an endearing character who is one of the genre’s most popular figures. \nHis career has always been about moving forward and carving a place for himself in the imposing terrain of the music business\, overcoming odds to continue growing and maturing as a creative force. He has built a constantly increasing base of fans across the world\, where in many territories he is a star. A native New Yorker\, Horowitz’s first gigs were in the NYC punk scene as a guitarist for what he reflects was a “crazy Japanese special effects performance artist in a kimono called Screaming Mad George who had a horror-movie inspired show.” Right from the start he was immersed in rock ‘n’ roll as theater\, and learned from George and others playing CBGB’s at the time that included the Ramones\, the Cramps\, Richard Hell\, whose band\, the Voidoids he joined that rock ‘n’ roll should be dangerous. He reflects\, “Musicians like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols weren’t just bands. They were a threat to society.” \nThe Blues however was the foundation of his playing style. He recalls\, “Since I’d grown up on Hendrix\, Cream and Led Zeppelin\, when I started playing blues in New York clubs I understood that the blues should be dangerous\, too. It wasn’t just from playing in punk bands. Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters were dangerous men. They’d cut or shoot you if they thought it was necessary\, and Little Walter packed a gun and wouldn’t hesitate to use it. That danger is a real part of the Blues and I keep it alive in my music.” \n\nPopa Chubby is his own man for better or worse. He reflects\, “I’m living in a wild time\, and that is where the inspiration is drawn from. There are my issues\, but the picture is much bigger than me and my situation. Everything is breaking down in the world. The lines are being redefined. We all need something.”

SUMMARY:The Uprooted Band at The Kate
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 2\, 2021 – 7:30 pm \nThe Uprooted Band featuring Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root – WHEN I WOKE – 25th Anniversary Tour \nMichael Glabicki\, lead singer\, songwriter and guitarist for Rusted Root fuses musical mastery and shamanic inspiration into his music and live performances. In his most prolific period to date Michael is focusing his energy on his new band\, UPROOTED\, to carry on the legacy of Rusted Root’s energetic music while recording new music for Uprooted’s debut album due out next spring.  To honor the past\, Michael is taking Uprooted on tour this fall and throughout 2020 to perform the multi-platinum album WHEN I WOKE in it’s entirety. When I Woke\, spawned the Top 40 hit “Send Me On My Way” along with fan favorites “Ecstasy” and “Martyr” (among others) and went on to chart on Billboard’s Hot 100. \n“Uprooted has masterfully expanded the landscape of the older Rusted Root songs and created a new intuitive and magnetic vision of the material” says Michael\, “These inspired performances not only energize and expand the hearts of the crowds but also show us how to take the new music to the next level”. \nRusted Root\, lead by Michael\, built their career around dramatic performances; their polyrhythmic\, multicultural rock-and-soul picked up fans like a junkyard magnet as they swept across the nation on tour.  Glabicki continues to keep this tradition alive through his new project\, The Uprooted Band. \nWith Dirk Miller on guitar and vocals\, Zil Fessler on drums\, Shawn Hennessey on percussion\, Erik Kramer on bass and Daisie Ghost Flower and Emily Victoria on background vocals\, Uprooted is a liberating project for Glabicki. He says “I looked to the past and imagined where I wanted to go and realized this band is the perfect vehicle to take me there.”  The Uprooted Tour will focus on the energy and excitement Rusted Root brought to all of their fans\, and keep the spirit of the music moving forward. \nPurchase tickets here.
