2021 Atlantic Broadband “Winter in Summer” Cinema Series

The Garde Arts Centers doors are opening again! Although they were forced to cancel the 2021 Annual Winter Cinema Series of critically acclaimed and Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated films, this August, your nonprofit home for the performing arts and cinema invites you to enjoy the 2021 Atlantic Broadband “Winter in Summer” Cinema Series

For only $48 you can experience on the Garde’s giant movie palace screen twelve (or more) critically acclaimed and Oscar and Golden Globe-winning and nominated films.

Just show your pass at the door for any movie you wish to see.  The Cinema Pass may be used by anyone you choose.

  • Summer of Soul  (Wed, August 4)
    Starring: Abbey Lincoln, B.B. King, David Ruffin, Jesse Jackson, Mahalia Jackson, Max Roach, Moms Mabley, Nina Simone, Sal Masekela, Stevie Wonder. Winner of the U.S. Grand Jury Prize (Documentary) and the U.S. Audience Award (Documentary) at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
  • Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom  (Thurs, August 5)
    Starring: Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis. Based on August Wilson’s play developed in 1982 at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut. Five Oscar nominations and two wins.
  • Minari (Fri, August 6)
    A tender and sweeping story about what roots us, Minari follows a Korean-American family that moves to a tiny Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. Received six Academy Award nominations including best picture Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and winner of the top prize (U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic) at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
  • My Octopus Teacher  (Wed, August 11)
    Oscar winner for Best Documentary.
  • Palm Springs (Thurs, August 12)
    This romantic documentary starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, J.K. Simmons received two Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture and Best Actor for a Musical or Comedy.
  • Mank (Fri, August 13)
    Starring Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins and directed by David Fincher, this biographical drama about the screenwriter for Orson Welles’ Citizens Kane, led the Oscars and the Golden Globes with the most nominations – 16 in all!
  • The Father  (Wed, August 18)
    Featuring a virtuoso performance by Anthony Hopkins, the heart-rending drama received six Oscar nominations including Best Picture.
  • The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Thurs, August 19)
    Eddie Redmayne, Alex Sharp, Sacha Baron Cohen star in writer/director Aaron Sorkin’s historical thriller about seven of the demonstrators at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago and their conspiracy trial that followed. Received six Oscar nominations including Best Picture.
  • Nomadland (Fri, August 20)
    The Oscar winner for Best Film, Actress and Directing features Frances McDormand as a woman in her sixties who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West.
  • Oscar-Nominated Live-Action Short Films  (Wed, August 25)
    Five Oscar-nominated short films from around the world including the Oscar-winning Two Distant Strangers.
  • One Night in Miami (Thurs, August 26)
    A fictional account of one incredible night where icons Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown gathered discussing their roles in the Civil Rights Movement and cultural upheaval of the 60s. Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, Aldis Hodge, Leslie Odom, Jr., and directed by Regina King.  received three Oscar Nominations.
  • In the Heights  (Fri & Sat, August 27 & 28)
    Another homegrown ground-breaking work developed at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, this film is based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical set in the largely Dominican neighborhood of Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan. The creator of “Hamilton” and the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” (John Chu) have jointly created a likely 2022 Oscar contender
