The Power of Words: A Celebration of Black Poets in Connecticut

The Lyman Allyn and Connecticut Poet Laureate, Margaret Gibson, are pleased to host “A Celebration of Black Poets in Connecticut.” This one-day event will feature a series of programs that highlight the work and knowledge of six award-winning contemporary black poets; Antoinette Brim-Bell, Kate Rushin, Marilyn Nelson, Rhonda Ward, Frederick-Douglas Knowles, and Josh Brown.

10:30 AM – 12:00 PM • Youth Writing Workshop
Learn with Hartford Poet Laurate Frederick-Douglas Knowles and New London Poet Laureate Josh Brown as they share their experiences weaving together poetry, music, and community. Create and workshop your own piece of expression.

Registration Required. This program is designed for upper-level high school students.

12:00 – 2:00 PM • Creative Common
Share your own creativity by participating in an open mic, contribute to a community mural, enjoy the company of fellow attendees, visit vendor tables, gain inspiration while exploring the Museum & grounds, and more!

2:00 – 4:00 PM • Keynote Reading and Conversation
Experience readings from four of Connecticut’s leading poets Antoinette Brim-Bell, Kate Rushin, Marilyn Nelson, and Rhonda Ward. Learn about their collaborative process for the Witness Stones Project, experience, challenges, and triumphs as writers, and the idea of shaping a legacy for young poets. The conversation will be moderated by Adriane Jefferson.
