Feast on Fall Flavors at Staehly’s

Sure, I’m a bit sad to see summer slide away, but New Englanders like us love fall almost as much. Apples, pumpkins, cider donuts, sweater weather…yes, please! For a quintessential day of leaf-peeping, pumpkin-hunting and all the fun fall has to offer, head to Staehly’s Farm Market in East Haddam on October 7th through 9th. This classic Connecticut family-owned farm (and winery!) pulls out all the stops for their annual Fall Flavor Festival. You’ll find twenty varieties of heritage apples, plus pumpkins in all shapes, colors, and sizes. A hay maze will keep the tots entertained, grown-ups can taste a variety of fruit wines, and everyone will love the lineup of food trucks (see below), so be sure to stay for lunch. New this year, Yankee Cider Company debuts a line of hard cider with tastings during the festival.  I always head to the farmstand for a jar or two of peaches (delish over vanilla ice cream) and (no kidding) some pickled beet balls.  And, of course, there’s plenty of local honey, kettle corn, farm fresh eggs, pie, and maple syrup, too. A full on fall celebration!
