Lavender Pond Farm, Killingworth

It’s everywhere — lavender!  And no, you’re not in Provence. You’re in the middle of Killingworth. From the sprawling lavender fields and scented air to the gift shop with its organic candles, lotions, soaps and more, Denise and Chris Salafia’s farm is like a fairytale. They are “making the world more beautiful,” living by the words of Miss Rumphius, a children’s book that holds a special place in their hearts. Ironically, I felt like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz (an entirely different character and book), wandering the fields amid lavender instead of poppies. Unlike Dorothy, I didn’t fall asleep, but relaxed — yes!  Lavender is prized for calming the mind, easing stress and relaxing the body. But that’s not all, there’s plenty to appeal to the whole family on a visit here. Bring the kids for a picnic lunch, view the honeybees hard at work, or traipse around the fresh water pond, and peruse the shop for lavender essential oils, sachets, pillows, bath salts, culinary flowers, event lavender scented insect repellant (available online, too). Keep an eye on the website for the start of Saturday yoga class in the field.
