One Stop Shop at Deep River Farms

Although I’ve driven past the giant red barn on West Elm in Deep River (on the way to Route 80) for years, never had I imagined it would one day morph into such a spectacular, fun-filled resource for this community. Deep River Farms’ current owners have spent the past three years transforming the land and honing their farming skills to bring us much more than a farm stand. You’ll find a full bounty of produce, flowers, plants, and herbs. But why stop there? The stand is decked out with a fresh new coffee bar, serving up every incarnation of caffeinated drinks and cold brews, plus organic herbal lemonade and CT made kombucha on tap.

Pick and choose among the farm-made loaves of crusty bread, flaky croissants, scones, and cookies. If savory is more your speed, they make their own tortilla chips, salsa, flavored butters (radish!), pickled vegetables, and a fermented favorite: kimchi. Stock up on prepared foods like Tikka Masala and quinoa salads with loads of fresh veggies. Don’t miss the freezer full of grass-fed rib-eyes and t-bones from Treaty Rock Farm in Little Compton. Oh, and handmade soap! And maple syrup! And honey!

It’s tough to choose the standout at Deep River Farms but if I had to pick, it would be the POPSICLE STAND. Fresh-made organic frozen treats are sold from the window of the hut next door to the farm shop. The chalkboard menu features flavors like Coconut Honey, Peanut Butter Banana Maple, and Acai. We devoured a Lemonade Lemon Chunk and a Strawberry Balsamic Basil on our first steamy-afternoon visit. Take a popsicle out back and gaze at the neat rows of every imaginable variety of herb (also for sale!). There’s even a spot for tots, complete with toy tractors and hay bails, but be sure and visit with the farm animals first.

Deep River Farms is hosting a series of socially-distant-friendly events this summer. Live music, plein air farm painting workshops, and bee-keeping demos are just the start. Check their FB page for updates. Ask about Curbside Pickup and Farm Memberships for exclusive benefits.
