What’s better than a fresh-baked, soft, salty pretzel? How about a fresh-baked, soft, salty pretzel bread stuffed with cheddar cheese known as a “Chetzel”? Lucky for us, we can now order up a bunch online and head to Kirtland Street in Deep River (across from the Piano Factory) for a curbside pickup at 8 Mile Meadow Bread & Pasta. Owner and baker, Jessica Chmura, churns out fresh pretzels and breads daily and she doesn’t stop there. Peruse her website and choose from handmade pastas, cookie dough, pestos and a slew of other baked goods, made from fresh, local and organic ingredients. It’s simple to order, pay and choose your pickup time. Call or text once you arrive and she’ll come out with your paper bag full of goodies.

Besides said coveted pretzels and Chetzels, I brought home both beet ravioli with goat cheese and a classic filled with ricotta  (comes frozen in one pound portions) to sample. Couldn’t resist a package of handy and generous servings of frozen cookie dough (six 3oz scoops) that delivers a big gooey chocolate chip cookie on demand. I threw in a sourdough baguette (made with locally grown organic wheat from Still River Farm in Coventry) with my last order and we tore it open during a home-happy-hour and happily dipped it in 8 MM’s bright, garlicky basil pesto. With such seamless ordering, I plan to order often and sample my way through the breads and pastas til I’ve tried them all.

Jessica, having honed her baking skills while working with the pros at Howard’s Bread, Dough on Main, and Pursuit of Pastry, opened this sweet little shop on March 25. She plans to be open for walk-ins/retail when possible, again.
