A Burger with a View at The Hangry Goose, Old Lyme

For such a picturesque spot, this eatery has inexplicably changed hands several times over the last few years. But we think the new owners may have finally nailed it. A straightforward breakfast and lunch menu with enough modern twists to keep it interesting (avocado toast, of course) comes with a spectacular view of the Lieutenant River.

We think the burger is the way to go here, sandwiched in a puffy brioche bun and served with sweet potato fries, regular fries or onion rings (I can’t resist them and you shouldn’t either). Or nosh on chicken gyros, a treat not often found around the Shoreline, a bevy of salads and satisfying sandwiches and wraps. If there’s a turkey sandwich on the menu, that’s what Laura goes for, and this one, with cranberry mayo and bacon jam on focaccia, lived up to its rather complicated description.

We sipped slowly on our iced teas and enjoyed a balmy breeze on a blistering afternoon and swore we’d be back for the tempting breakfast menu for a lovely start to the day.

Good to know: kids menu available. Open 7 – 2:30 every day, 7 – 12 on Sunday.
