A Cozy Fall Dinner at The Village Bistro, Chester

It had been an age since I dined at The Village Bistro. A night at The Goodspeed to see A Chorus Line presented the perfect opportunity. This cozy spot in charming Chester serves up a tempting menu of global small plates and mains with a French accent. Our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs, and we happily over-ordered. Crispy shrimp on rice cakes was a umami-rich starter, and I could not stop dipping fresh tortilla chips into a pot of Mexican street corn. A fallish dinner of Coq au Vin sounded scrumptious to me, which it was, with melting pearl onions on a pool of creamy mashed potatoes in a deep, rich sauce, with plenty to take home. Beef Pad Thai, a combo of slightly sweet rice noodles and hoisin sauce, with crunchy bean sprouts and peanuts, hit all the right notes. Don’t sleep on the burger here, known to be one of the best around. An attentive and sweet server, cozy room, and great friends added up to an A+ dining experience.
