An Instant Vacation at Siren Kitchen & Bar

We were so excited to hear that Haywire Burger Bar was taking over the old Marley’s location at Essex Island Marina, but we had to wait a full year before we could take the 30-second launch to the island. We donned our masks and hopped the tiny ferry to the fully renovated restaurant and bar with a view of the river. This is fun, casual food (and nary a burger in sight). We snacked on Smoked Chicken Wings in Honey Gochujang Sauce and delish Elote Corn Fritters while sipping fresh cocktails (mine a refreshing strawberry basil concoction) and gazing at the boats lazily making their way downstream.

For our main courses, I chose the beer-boiled shrimp (a favorite low-cal, high protein meal), and my daughter was thrilled with a simple dish of bourbon-marinated steak skewers, boiled new potatoes, and green beans. It’s a seafood-based menu with classic lobster rolls, clam rolls, fish tacos, fish and chips available, plus lots of creative sandwiches, salads, and gluten-free options. Tots can choose from hot dogs, grilled cheese, or chicken tenders.

If the deck is full when you make your way over, you can grab takeout and sit at one of the socially-distanced tables at the marina. We can’t go far this summer, but if you’re aching for an instant vacay, complete with beach jams and fruity cocktails, head straight here.

Good to know: Outdoor table service or takeout. No reservations. We had no trouble getting a seat for a 5 pm early dinner, but I imagine there can be a wait. Open every day from 11 – 8pm. If you’re arriving by boat, tune into channel 9 or call 860-767-2483 for dockage assistance.
