Breakfast (and Lunch) at Bleu Squid

I’ve been a fan of Bleu Squid since they opened in 2009. Their fresh and interesting sandwich combos were fortification for a day of browsing the Village boutiques, and they were on the cupcake bandwagon long before it was a national obsession. These days, they’ve expanded their digs and menu and are offering breakfast all day (along with lunch starting at 10:30). While you’ll find all the standards here, the owners have crafted a creative menu, and you’ll be hard-pressed to make a decision.

Breakfast out is generally a compilation of side dishes for me as I don’t eat eggs (a grilled cheese counts as morning fare in my book), but here it was no problem. The Home-Fry Skillets are the way to go. For me, cherrywood smoked bacon, Vermont cheddar, sour cream and scallions atop a mound of home fries had my name on it. So delish, and ample enough to bring half home for my happy husband. Vegetarians will choose the roasted tomato, artichoke, red pepper combo, and ONE day I’ll go for the Kitchen Sink: bacon, kielbasa, house made sausage, caramelized onions, and cheese! I got very excited over the skillets, but there’s lots more, including Twisted Bene’s (variations on the classic) like corn polenta and pulled pork or Yorkshire pudding and lobster. I recommend a green juice (kale, spinach, apple and cuke) to wash it all down or perhaps an iced chai. The creative menu continues for lunch with all manner of grilled cheese on freshly baked bread. Everything is available gluten-free, including some of the assortment of over 60 cupcake varieties. These folks win accolades every year for their baked goods, so grab a 1/2 dozen to bring home, as you probably won’t make it to dessert. But, oh, maybe just one little frosting shot…
