Healthy Options at The Whistle Stop Cafe in Deep River

The trusty Whistle Stop Cafe, a family-owned business since the 1930’s, is now owned and operated by a member of its youngest generation. Norma is following up her mom’s 25-year stint at the griddle and adding some healthy touches to the scratch-made menu. A joint that once served up hundreds of hamburgers to the workers at booming factories in the area, it’s easy to see why the locals hold it so dear.

I stopped in for a taste of the Vegan Hash for breakfast after the rush one Sunday. A bright blend of beets, carrots, and onions scrambled with tofu was hearty enough to get me through the day. Also on offer are locally-made Cohen’s bagels and a slew of healing teas to accompany their beloved menu of Egg Bennies and classic breakfast treats. In a nod to reducing waste, bring your own mug and fill up on a 99 cent coffee (weekdays only!).

Whistle Stop will be closed for painting and sprucing from 2/18 – 2/25 and reopening on 2/26 with even more menu options.
