Los Charros Al Fresco and The Essex Market

We’ve been happily taking out the taco kits at Los Charros during the lock-down but were VERY excited to head to the mammoth tents recently set up on the property. Owner Colt Taylor has worked some magic to make sure you don’t feel like you’re chowing down in a parking lot. He’s placed raised beds of organic veggies at the front of the tents, and the interiors are festively hung with twinkly lights and pinatas. Considering how low and lonely we’ve been feeling, this joint felt like a party! There’s tons of room between tables, you help yourself to the plates from the servers’ trays, and everything is disposable and biodegradable. I’m a fan of the Shrimp Ajillo and Carne Asada tacos, and the creamy Wheatberry Esquites are killer. We sipped classic margaritas while we bopped along to the “poolside jams” and cheerfully toasted a family celebrating a birthday. For our first foray into the new world, it was a blast.

Good to know: Head to the side door for the Essex Market, filled with all manner of global takeout from Tonkatsu Pork Ramen and Bibimbap to classic Italian and Mexican dishes, plus home-baked bread, flour, and grocery items.
