My Dream California Closet & A Discount for E List Readers
Posted On : March 16, 2026
Believe it or not, one of the most exciting things I planned for my new house was the primary closet! For the fourth time, I teamed up with California Closets and their creative designer, Pam Burr.
While the closet in my old house was big ENOUGH, I wanted something a bit roomier, and it was easy this time as I could plan it right into the build.
Originally, we had split the room into a closet and laundry room, but after living in a rental cottage while building my house, with the washer and dryer tucked right into the primary closet, I was sold. That clever setup let me expand the closet, add a linen cabinet, and finally have a spot for everything.
Pam and I had a few fun design sessions, tweaking every detail until it felt perfect. We analyzed hanging vs. shelving space, how much room for shoes, and added a hamper. Pam then provides 3-D schematics that make it come to life.
I wanted something a bit more elegant than what I’ve done before (basic white), so I chose the gorgeous white oak finish. It’s consistent with the cabinetry in the rest of the house and looks stunning. I added my own polished-nickel knobs, and Pam had the genius idea to top the dresser with a slab of the Taj Mahal stone I used in the kitchen. The overall feel is much more “dressing room” than closet, and I love hanging out in there.
We sprinkled in some stylish extras: white faux-leather rods, built-in lockable jewelry trays to match, and even a double laundry basket. I especially love the valet rods for hanging jeans and making packing a breeze.
I do a little seasonal swap (summer dresses, cashmere sweaters), but otherwise I can fit my entire wardrobe in the space. My favorite trick is hanging pants on the top bar so I can actually see what I have in the mass of denim and black. I color-code my blouses just because it’s oddly satisfying, and I attempt to keep short-sleeved tees apart from long-sleeved ones, though they love to wander. My motto? Organized enough. As long as I can find what I need, I call it a win.
