Nana’s Bakery & Pizza, A Palate Expanding Experience in Mystic

The talented team that brought us Oyster Club, Grass & Bone, The Engine Room, and Stone Acres Farm has just given us one more reason to lure us to Mystic. The 85th Day Food Community (as the restaurant group is called) has just launched Nana’s Bakery & Pizza. Envisioned to provide the restaurants with the best scratch-baked goods, this outpost offers breads, pizza, and more, baked from organic grains milled in house. If you’re familiar with their trio of restaurants, you’ll know that the ingredients are not only local but mainly made in house, down to the sausage on the pizza. The name and humble signage belies the menu that is anything but standard breakfast and lunch fare.

Like many Nutmeggers, pizza is one of our very favorite foods, and here, you can even have it for breakfast. We rushed down last week to fill up on carbs, and that we did. Gluttony prevailed as we ordered the clam pie and a classic tomato on the most wonderful chewy sourdough crust. We couldn’t resist the umami-rich sourdough donut served hot and draped in caramel or the big-as-your-head biscuit. There was so much more on the menu that we wanted to try, including the housemade miso soup with shiitake mushrooms and a soft boiled farm egg, and the Farm Egg Sandwich with pimento cheese on a freshly baked English muffin. Besides the usual lineup of espresso drinks, interesting concoctions include the Oaxaca, a spicy and warming blend of espresso, piloncillo, dark chocolate, and chili de Arbol.

But for this New England girl, you can’t really improve upon clam, bacon, potato, and garlic pizza (a riff on clam chowder) for brunch. The naturally leavened pies are available as a 13” (plenty for two) or a thick crust sheet pan that you can order by the slice.

We brought home cheesy focaccia and a honey wheat loaf, plus the rest of our gluttonous order. On the way, we stopped at Grass & Bone for our favorite rotisserie chicken, and we had meals for days.

Take out or order online. You’ll find some seating and picnic tables outside by the river, a sweet spot to enjoy your coffee as you wait for your breakfast or lunch.

Open daily, breakfast 7am – 11am. Lunch and Dinner 11am to 8pm.
