Ramen, Rice and Bao at AJ Noodle Bar, Old Saybrook
We’ve been craving a noodle bar around here for as long as we can remember. At last, one has materialized in Old Saybrook and we have already been in a few times. In the plaza behind Paperback Cafe, adjacent to Fantasia, now lives AJ Noodle Bar. Hard-pressed to narrow our choices from the extensive menu of favorites from Shumai to Tom Yum, we went for simple with a Chicken and Rice Bowl – a soft egg over rice with chicken and pickled onions. A standout so far was the Miso Ramen, a hearty serving of Chashu (pork belly), Ajitama (soy-marinated, jammy egg), fried onion, Narutomaki (fish cake), corn, and bamboo shoots. Important to note, when ordered to-go, their nifty containers hold all the carefully crafted toppings separate from the broth, so it arrives home in good order! Genius. We noshed on the tasty pork bao buns, too and next time, it’s Gyozas and Agedashi Tofu. Plus, they offer a variety of milk bubble tea (the Matcha!), Thai iced teas and Japanese sodas.
Have a seat in their bright and simple dining area or easily order take-out online.
