South Lane Bistro, Guilford

We’ve got a number of fantastic restaurants on the Shoreline, but my husband and I often lament the fact that there’s a dearth of good basics. You know what I’m talking about: the sort of spot for a weeknight supper of simple, clean food, without breaking the bank. A cozy room where he could nosh on a burger and sip a craft beer, while I tuck into a plate of roast chicken. Or the kind of place to spend a rollicking night out with the girls, feasting on oversize kale salads and crisp Sauvignon Blanc. Well, that place is South Lane Bistro. In small quarters off the Guilford Green, down the brick alley next to The Purple Bear, you’ll find a modern but rustic space, clad in reclaimed wood. The outdoor deck is so well thought out, complete with Italian wine umbrellas, a minimalist fireplace, and arbors overhead, that you’ll forget the surrounding parking lot. The menu is sure to please with housemade guac and chips, crisp calamari, plenty of dinner-sized salad options and simple entrees. The highest priced item is the NY strip at $22, but you can eat well for under $15. Save room for shortcake with local strawberries or a salted caramel Belgian waffle for dessert.
