Surf & Turf Dog at The Pearl, New Haven
What happens when you hear of a spot that creates a concoction of all your favorite foods? You race right over, that’s what. On a crisp early fall day, we headed to The Pearl, a tiny outpost of Fairhaven Oyster Co., perched alongside the Quinnipiac River. Our mission was to sample the Surf and Turf: a foot-long Hummel on a Martin’s roll, topped with fresh lobster salad and a sprinkling of trout roe. What may sound kooky to some was right up my alley! I’m a girl who prefers my dogs with a smear of mustard and nothing else, so this was a leap even for me. But the unlikely combo of creamy salad and salty roe piled on a tasty dog was worth the schlep to Fairhaven!
If the Surf & Turf dog is over-the-top for you, try the Classic, Cheesy Chili, or New Haven Style (clam jam, bacon, and red pepper relish). Lobster rolls here are an elevated variety, either served cold with creme fraiche and trout roe or hot, buttered with brown butter crumbs. Cocktails are available, seating is riverside, and next time, maybe a double-decker moon pie or soft serve flavor of the week!
The truck will be dispensing dogs and rolls until the weather is too cold to bear. Then, you can head across the parking lot to Fairhaven Oyster Co. for oysters, an imaginative seafood-inspired menu, and inside dining brought to you by the folks behind the fabulous State Street Tavern.
